1 edit | Judging from the other thread, you're not having GRUB issues, but ACPI hangs. You might want to re-title the thread to get more replies.
Did you try noacpi or nolapci as was suggested in the Ubuntu forum?
It's probably noteworthy that you're using Hardy. |

1 edit | yep I just tried that.
it leaves me with a prompt saying:
username-laptop login:
what should I do from here?
I would be using a non beta release, but due to the fact that gutsy crashes my system whenever it sees fit 5-10 minutes after starting, I don't have much choice... =/
prior to gutsy, when I tried it during the 6.x cycle it would not recognize my notebook monitor.
this is all on 3 different notbook models mind you. |

Maybe I'm missing something. |

What graphics card/chipset are you using? Can you get to a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F2? Can you log in there? |

| reply to grazed At that login prompt, just hit Enter. You should get another identical prompt, and at this second one, log in. The response should be a message followed by a command-line prompt. At this prompt, type startx and hit enter. If the installation has properly recognized your hardware, this should get you a gray screen with an "X" in the middle, followed several seconds later by your normal desktop.
I'm not at all sure this will work with Hardy but it's what I had to do to get into Gutsy before I did some massive editing to the entire boot sequence package. Back at Feisty, they replaced the well-known sysv boot technique with something called upstart, that tries to run as many of the boot scripts as possible in parallel rather than sequentially, in order to boot more rapidly. One effect of the implementation in Gutsy was to actually repeat about half of the boot sequence, resulting in a hidden login prompt about halfway through the process. Hitting enter causes that one to go away and leaves the system able to respond normally to the next login attempt. -- Jim Kyle |
