| [Availability] Why Can't I Get Naked with DSLX?
I currently have a voice line with AT&T and DSL service with DSL Extreme. DSLX told me they do naked DSL (aka "dry loop") in Verizon service areas but not in AT&T. I see posts here that AT&T does offer naked DSL in California. So why can't I get naked with DSLX? Is it a limitation set by AT&T or DSLX? I'm in San Diego: 858-547-xxxx.
Thanks. |

| I got lucky the voice line is in the my room mates name who's unemployed so he qualifies for the life line plus or whatever its called. Its like low income pricing for phone service for those who can't afford it. We pay something like $6 a month, no LD nothing but a dial tone right now. No phone even connected to the line just our DSL modem.

| reply to wobsie As some of our expert clients here mentioned, AT&T doesn't currently offer standalone or naked DSL through their wholesale channel. We can offer it in Verizon areas but not currently in AT&T areas. If you are only going to use the phone line for DSL service I would recommended getting a metered usage local phone line from them. They are typically around $10 per month. |

@sdsu.edu | Why can AT&T offer naked dsl in their area but other DSL companies can't? Isn't that the whole point -- for people to be able to get any DSL they want w/o having to buy service they don't want? |

| One more thing -- I have the "basic DSL" from DSLX: 384-768 kbps download / 128-384 kbps upload. Is that adequate for VOIP ?
Also -- I'm thinking of getting VONAGE. $25/mo seems good, even w/ $10 taken by AT&T for a useless voice line. Is there something better than VONAGE? |

| reply to wobsie Because that's the agreements that they have in place for wholesale DSL lines. AT&T only allowed dry loop DSL with their arm twisted by FCC as a condition when they purchased Bell South, if I'm not mistaken. AT&T wouldn't even offer it themselves unless they 'had' to. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Verizon's cost for service makes up the difference anyways. AT&T 1500/384kbps = $17.95-$22.95 Verizon 1500/384kbps = $29.95-$44.95
AT&T 3008/512kbps = $19.95-$27.95 Verizon 3000/768kbps = $39.95- $49.95
AT&T 6008/768kbps = $29.95-$34.95 Verizon 7000/768 = $99.95-$119.95
As far as VoIP, I haven't tested the 'bottom' limits of VoIP, however, you should be ok, as long as you're not doing anything on the PC/Internet with that kind of speed. I use Skype VoIP (w/o phone number - calls outbound only) for $3/month unlimited, and it works very well - and included web cam service. Limitation is that it requires your computer to do the actual calls (I make use of a Motorola bluetooth headset from my cell phone). It is pretty robust - being able to use port forwarded lines over SSH through proxy servers and still make calls. -- Canada = Hollywood North |

| reply to wobsie I think that depends on the amount of bandwidth you use at the same time.
I have 6000/608 and periodically get echo on AT&T Callvantage when I am downloading torrents.
I also have three others PC surfing the net. I also have a Wii and PS3 connected.
I would say that what you have is barely enough for comfortable VOIP and other internet apps running at the same time. |
