[Vista] Good vista optimization and tweak software

Are there any authentic and reliable windows vista tweaking or optimizing softwares out there yet?

What do you want tweaked or optimized that isn't now?

When XP came out we had tweak_ui from the MS devs. No such support for Vista from MS besides the few tweaks from Mark Russinovich (sp?) that don't work.

There are some 3rd party tweak programs you can find if you search for Vista tweaks, and some sites that explain how to do it yourself.

I think that Vista is too bloated and immature for any kind of tweaks to be reliable ATM.

I am looking for a utility that would do some of the following things..... optimize services by disabling ones that are not needed as I dont wanna do this manually..... and something that generally optimizes my overall settings

There is always "BlackViper" for services. He has Vista pages as well: »www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

I will tell you honestly in my opinion the best tweak for services under XP or Vista is no tweak at all; buy sufficient RAM.

I violently disagree. Vista is so bloated out of the box that it takes the hard drive a full 5 minutes to half way calm down. Move the mouse one time and it runs for another 90 seconds. What the hell is that all about ? I had it kill a brand new drive in 8 months, and this was a new c2d machine w/ 2 gb ram.
Here is my own list of tweaks that I developed after tuning up 4 different boxes. I copied this from the document in my personal tool box. Makes it snappy and smoothe like XP !

Windows Vista Tune Up Process

1 – Turn off C: drive indexing under hard drive properties.

2 – Uninstall non-essential Microsoft components in Add/Remove programs including “Remote Differential Components” and “Tablet PC”.

3 – Set Page file size in Advanced Computer properties. Turn off Windows update in Control Panel. Trim non-essential startup programs from MSCONFIG. Kill the alert nag by saying “Run Disabled programs – Configuration – and check the DO NOT NOTIFY option”.

4 – Disable these services in Control Panel – Administrative Tools –

Application Experience, Function Discovery Resource Publication, IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules, Internet Connection Sharing, IP Helper, IPsec Policy Agent, Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service, Offline Files, Parental Controls, Ready Boost, Remote Access Connection Manager, Remote Registry, Routing and Remote Access, Secondary Logon, Server, SL UI Notification Service, Superfetch, Tablet PC Input Service, Telephony, Terminal Services, Windows Defender, Windows Media Center Extender Service, Windows Search, Windows Update, WLAN AutoConfig, Machine Debugger Manager.
Can also kill Error Reporting and System Event Notification.

5 – Network Adapter Stack – Remove everything except IPV4 and the classic components.

6 – Control Panel – Security Center – Change the way it Alerts to “Don’t tell me a damn thing”.

7 – Run Defrag and then turn off Defrag in the Control Panel – Administrative tools – Component Services.

There is something wrong then. I have used a Vista laptop with 1gb ram and Vista Index of 3.1 and it would take about a minute or so before everything is loaded.

"Everything Loaded" and "takes the hard drive a full 5 minutes to half way calm down" are 2 completely different things.

Your hard drive was bad in the first place, SERIOUSLY doubt Vista killed it I've seen ALOT of bad/dead hard drives in this shop - and ALL of the hard drive are on XP machines - I have YET to see a Vista machine came in with a bad hard drive (only because it's still new). On some of those machines with bad hard drive, XP were still bootable but Windows were VERY SLOW - taking a LONG time to navigate/load stuff - checked the Event Viewer "bad block" - AH HA!. So does that tell me I should blame XP?

I have done no tweaking at all on five of my Vista machines I use daily - nothing in your list of tweak that I did and my Vista run so fast it's not funny. I just updated drivers/windows and that's it. I boot up my laptop every single day (has C2D 1.8, 2 GIG of RAM) - I don't use hibernation mode - laptop boots up in under a min - usable as soon I see the icons on desktop.

Everything loaded means thing are calm unless something is wrong.

Have you installed SP1 yet? AFAIK, it should help with the disk "threshing" issue you have mentioned and calm your drive down a bit....

Also, try TweakVI from total idea.

»www.totalidea.com/content/tweakv···ndex.php

Activate hundreds of hidden Windows Vista settings
* clean your registry
* activate system and software restrictions
* display detailed system information
* create a 256 MB RAM drive
* protect your privacy
* clean your hard drive
* manage TrueType fonts
* improve your internet connection
* optimize your CPU
* optimize your RAM
* manage system updates, and much more ...

Comparison of the free vs paid versions of the program:
»www.totalidea.com/content/tweakv···ons.html

According to TotalIDEA, you can even transfer your tweaks and settings to other machines.
