Are modems identifiable?

Hey I have two questions. I saw an official shaw modem on the cheap through craigslist, but I have no way of knowing this persons dealings with SHAW. I want to buy it to save on my bill but if I do and the seller a) stole it from someone, b) stole it from SHAW, I have no way of knowing. If that were the case would SHAW kick my door down? And if so, what information should I get from the seller to protect myself?

These days its hard to trust people. In this case YOU can make sure by asking the seller for the Modem Serial Number. After that, you can call SHAW and ask them if that modem can be activated if they say yes, you can go and buy it at your discresion

Even better. They're running a promo where you get the modem for free, if you're a new internet subscriber, plus the first month free and 6 more at reduced price.

And they really won't like moving hardware from one account to another, unless they speak with the original owner of the hardware and get a confirmation from them BEFORE you try to activate it. I say, don't bother trying to buy it used.

If you still want to buy a used modem get the MAC address off of the sticker on it. If you call Shaw, and tell them you are thinking of buying a used modem, they can give you the history on that unit. But like most of the others have said, you can usually get the modem for free if you are a new customer or a a very good price otherwise.
