The Actiontec also provides the LAN connection for the STB's over coax which provides VOD and guide data. The OP was undoubtedly provided an Actiontec by the installer. It's not clear he wants to use a 5 port switch instead of the provided Actiontec.

If it does then connecting a switch will work fine, the router will hand out multiple IP addresses. Since the switch only works with a single PC implies ONT does not include a NAT router. In that case you need a router to connect more then one PC at a time. /tom
