| [General] ADSL Drops When Phone goes Off Hook
My ADSL drops whenever I answer the phone or make a call. While I am on the phone it comes back up until I hang up. Then it goes off line again for a minute before comming back on line. I have replaced the filters and unplugged all the phones except 1. I have tried a new phone in all the jacks and no change. I have checked the lines and they all seem fine |

| You either have an unfiltered phone device that you hadn't thought of as needing a filter, e.g. fax, TiVo, etc. OR more likely you have an MTU in your NID: »DSL Loses Sync when Phone is Used
If you have an MTU, it should be removed by an AT&T tech. The techs in AT&T Direct: »/forum/sbcdirect can remotely test for the presence of an MTU and arrange for its removal. You must be registered at DSLR (it's free) to be able to post a Trouble thread in Direct.
Normally these are discovered once a new user starts DSL service, but sometimes they can "lurk" and not cause problems until months or years after DSL has started. |

Thanks to d_l, I have posted inthe AT&T direct forum. I looked and I do have the MTU circuit board in my box.
To martyp; I'm dumb, but not that dumb.
I could take it out myself but probably should let the company do it. |

Since you aren't that dumb  maybe you should reconsider doing it yourself.

This is the type of mtu in my box. If I just need to cut it out and splice it then no problem. Is there anything else I need to do? No extra filters to install like in your resedential install?

To prevent problems later on (due to deteriorating connections) it is recommended that you use gel-filled moisture resistant splices .

| Thanks to all who helped me. I was able to open up the phone company side of my box and unhook the MTU. I then used jumper wire from the posts on the AT&T side over to the customer side and into the module.
It was a bear getting the AT&T side of the box open but a small screwdriver and some needle nose pliers worked just fine.I am back up and working with no ADSL outages when using the phone. I just unhooked the module so I did not have to splice anything.
So what was the MTU for anyway?

At one time, they were used for remote testing (the initials stand for Maintenance Termination Unit) of the line condition up to the NID. I don't know if they still test through them, but the MTUs are disappearing one by one from the network as they are incompatible with DSL service and must be removed. |

Santa Ana, CA | Yeah, they still show up on our MLT test here in the POTS world. Kinda nice to get a no sync/intrmntnt sync with an MTU MLT test. Usally an easy fix .  |
