Coming To Your Cell Phone: Text Messages From Uncle Sam

The FCC has approved a new nationwide alert system that will send text messages to cell phones to alert Americans when an emergency, disaster, or attack occurs. Only three types of events will trigger the emergency text message, which will be sent by your carrier.

This is a good idea, though I am sure it will be completely ignored by many. The text messages will be sent for the following reasons: there is a terrorist or other attack that threatens the safety or health of Americans; an imminent or on-going natural disaster such as an earthquake, hurricane or tornado; or an Amber alert.

If any of these three happens, your network operator will be contacted by the government, and an alert will be sent to your mobile phone. Participation by the network operators is not mandatory, though AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have all said they will adopt the program. Smaller, regional carriers are likely to follow suit.

FCC chairman Kevin Martin said, "The ability to deliver accurate and timely warnings and alerts through cell phones and other mobile services is an important next step in our efforts to help ensure that the American public has the information they need to take action to protect themselves and their families prior to, and during, disasters and other emergencies."
Amber alerts could actually be an annoyance since they happen relatively frequently.

Less or more annoying than having your child abducted?

An annoyance to everyone not related to the missing kid. Especially when it isn't a real abduction. It will depend on how frequently these alerts are issued and how widespread they disseminate them away from the child's immediate community.

I am waiting for the first text message to arrive. Hopefully the will use abbreviated texting to save characters and time.

I can see the first doomsday messages:

Run 4 the Hills

or

U R Toast (maybe literally)

Perhaps. Provided they're reasonable and regionally specific, I kind of think some irritation on my part is well worth catching a dirtbag before he kills a child.

I have to agree. I travel quite a bit and they do a very good job at keeping the highway signs confined to a specific area, so as long as they only alert the immediate and surrounding areas, I don't think it would be bad.

The activation criteria are already pretty stringent: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Aler···criteria

Anyone know how effective these actually are at catching the dirtbags? Or how many false positives they generate?

I'm all for helping rescue kids (and anyone else for that matter) who are in danger, but I've always had a sneaking suspicion that this is just one of those "feel-good" measures that allows politicians to look like they're doing something.

That being said, I wouldn't mind SMS Government Alerts on my cell phone provided I don't have to pay for it, if I could opt-out of receiving them (or a subset of them like Amber Alerts), and if they don't end up spamming my inbox.

My opinions are my own. No-one else would want them!

LOL...this is what came up in my "Random Fortune":
This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. If this had been an
actual emergency, do you really think we'd stick around to tell you?
apropos, no?

I have been receiving Amber Alert text messages for a goodly period of time and they appear to be just for the region, i.e. not for OK, etc.

I have Cingular/AT&T and have not been charged for the amber alerts.

Ok let me guess. It is illegal to talk while driving, but reading is OK.

Interesting.

Karl, you are absolutely correct, the faster that we can catch these Lewd kidnappers, and have them shot dead will be a benefit to all.

Someone please sign me up for the alerts, I already routinely carry a Legally Concealed Firearm, and wish to help out wherever needed.

I heard an ad on the radio about this service this morning. It sounded like it was an opt-in service. Maybe this is something different?

The site in the ad was wirelessamberalerts.org

Just wondering

@4.7.x.x
Oh, and I should also say that I'm for this service. Even if it helps save one child, it's worth the extra text messages.

I think it is good to be on the look out for someones missing child. What if it were your kid.

What if the abductor took the child all the way to your state. Wouldn't you want to help?

Sure you would.

I just don't understand others lack of concern and all they consider things like this as a nuisance.
