| [SW Ontario] Moving to North York... Cogeco Throttled?
Hey everyone!
So, come June 1st, I will be moving to North York (around Finch and Keele) and have started looking into figuring out which ISP to go with.
From the outset: I am a pretty heavy bit-torrent user (private trackers only) as well as have a PS3 that is always online. So, decent upload and download speeds are pretty important to me.
I am coming from Videotron (in Quebec), which I am pretty happy with. I reliably get around 9100 kb/s down and 815 kb/s up, unthrottled. The only downside is the 100 GB cap that they imposed recently (but even that isn't too big of a deal).
I would like to keep a cable line as I already own a cable modem (and I kind of have intrinsically loathed DSL ever since using Bell Sympatico in my youth) but have been considering TekSavvy as my next ISP. However, as they are being throttled now through Bell, I am keeping my options open.
Basically, I would love to know if anyone here is in the North York region and if they could post about the speeds they typically observe. I know throttling by Cogeco is sort of hit or miss, so don't worry if they aren't 100% accurate. If I do go with Cogeco, I'll be getting the Pro package (no cable TV nor digital phone, so about $70 a month - which is significantly more expensive than the TekSavvy package I was looking at).
Any advice would be appreciated! |

| That's Rogers country.
So unfortunately you can't go with Cogeco, but you can go with Rogers Internet services as Cogeco doesn't serve any part of Toronto, it does serve Oakville and Burlington in the west, but nowhere in the actually old City of Toronto or former suburbs.
Sorry Not specifically sure on the Rogers prices, but their website I'm sure has all the details. |

Thanks for the quick response. I'll go search the Rogers board (although I've heard some pretty bad things about them, as an ISP). |

| Well, they're in the news lately as they're circumventing internet advertising with their own, however I've a few friends on Rogers who have no issues uploading torrents whatsoever. I also think Rogers is going to be in the 100GB cap country as well, just like Videotron.
It's so strange how Canada seemed to be a wonderful land of internet awesomeness, and in the past year we've entered the dark ages, of caps, net neutrality issues, torrent disruption, blah blah blah... far worse than the US! |

| Thats for sure, its amazing how much of a downturn things have taken in the past 6 months. Kind of depressing knowing there are so few options now for decent, unmolested internet access with decent caps and a reasonable price. --
