Spring in the NW????

Just came home from work and turned on the 'puter. Updated the info from my Weather Pulse program and got the severe weather alert siren blaring in my ear!

Here's a copy/paste of the alert:

"Special Weather Statement

SAN JUAN COUNTY-WESTERN WHATCOM COUNTY- SOUTHWEST INTERIOR- EAST PUGET SOUND LOWLANDS-WESTERN SKAGIT COUNTY-EVERETT AND VICINITY- SEATTLE/BREMERTON AREA- TACOMA AREA-ADMIRALTY INLET AREA- HOOD CANAL AREA-LOWER CHEHALIS VALLEY AREA- OLYMPICS- EASTERN STRAIT OF JUAN DE FUCA-WESTERN STRAIT OF JUAN DE FUCA- NORTH COAST-CENTRAL COAST-WEST SLOPES NORTHERN CASCADES AND PASSES- WEST SLOPES CENTRAL CASCADES AND PASSES- 1020 AM PDT WED APR 16 2008
...UNUSUALLY COLD WEATHER IS EXPECTED FRIDAY THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK...

A DEEP UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING SOUTHEAST FROM THE GULF OF ALASKA WILL MOVE INTO THE AREA FRIDAY AND WILL LINGER THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK. THIS UPPER LEVEL LOW WILL GIVE QUITE COOL AND UNSTABLE CONDITIONS TO THE AREA FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. WHILE DRIER AIR WILL BEGIN TO FILTER INTO THE AREA SUNDAY INTO MONDAY... TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN UNUSUALLY COOL FOR MID TO LATE APRIL.

AT THIS TIME OF YEAR...TEMPERATURES IN THE LOWLANDS TYPICALLY RANGE FROM LOWS 35 TO 45...AND HIGHS ARE NEAR 60. LOW TEMPERATURES ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WILL GENERALLY BE IN THE 30S...WHILE HIGHS STAY IN THE 40S. THESE TEMPERATURES ARE MORE TYPICAL OF EARLY TO MID FEBRUARY. NEAR RECORD LOW MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM TEMPERATURES ARE LIKELY ON SATURDAY. TEMPERATURES IN THE MOUNTAINS WILL STAY IN THE 20S AND 30S.

SNOW LEVELS FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY MORNING WILL AVERAGE AROUND 1000 FEET...AND MAY FALL TO NEAR SEA LEVEL IN HEAVIER SHOWERS. ANY SNOW THAT FALLS IN THE LOWLANDS IS UNLIKELY TO STICK...EXCEPT BRIEFLY ON CARS AND GRASS. THE MOUNTAINS AND CASCADE PASSES WILL SEE ACCUMULATING SNOW FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...WITH ACCUMULATIONS OVER THE TWO DAY PERIOD POSSIBLY BETWEEN 1 AND 2 FEET.

STRONG HIGH PRESSURE DEVELOPING OVER BRITISH COLUMBIA SATURDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK WILL ALLOW DRIER AIR TO FILTER INTO THE AREA. WHILE DAYTIME TEMPERATURES WILL MODERATE INTO THE LOWER TO MID 50S SUNDAY AND MONDAY... NIGHTTIME LOWS WILL BE QUITE COLD FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR WITH ANY CLEARING. FROST...WITH FREEZING NIGHTTIME TEMPERATURES IN PROTECTED AND OUTLYING AREAS WILL LIKELY CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR ANYONE WITH SENSITIVE NURSERY STOCK... ORNAMENTALS...OR VEGETABLES THAT WERE PLANTED EARLY.

MONITOR THE FORECASTS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CLOSELY THE NEXT FEW DAYS."

Sheesh, I've put my over-wintered fuschias outside and was thinking of planting some annuals. Guess I'll put the fuschias back into the garage and wait a bit on other plantings!

Re: Spring in the NW????

I saw a few cars yesterday morning (6:15a) with a thin layer of snow on them! I'm so ready for SUMMER

I'm worried now about the stuff I planted this last weekend when it was 80F

anything in a pot should go inside/under an overhang.
even some plants in the garden close to flowering should get a sheet/remay/ even visqueen thrown over them for friday night.
We had a dusting of snow monday AM, but this is sounding more threating, either snow or cold, cold.

Snow/rain mix for me predicted over the weekend....great. Thankfully I got out last weekend AND I didn't get too used to that weather.

Looks like it'll get us just a bit here in Mendocino County in Northwestern California, though colder temps will be the main thing it brings us. It was cold here last night, 28, which for getting into mid to late April is pretty chilly, they issued a freeze and frost warning yesterday for NW CA.

It's been an odd Spring, we had an inch of rain in late March, but so far April has been dry, though cold. We've had about 35 inches of rain in Redwood Valley this winter season, and the mountains here (and across Central and the rest of NorCal) are at 120% of normal snowfall, so we'll have a good water year, unlike last year's dismal showing (we only had about half of our normal).

Yikes, tshirt! Are you putting the chains on the vehicle and stocking up on supplies?

It's about 3:30 p.m. and still pretty nice here in Tacoma although the sky looks a bit threatening!

My wife stopped on the way home, put on her chains (first " non-practice" attempt, I think) sat for a couple minutes (steeling herself for to higher hills) decided it was a little better, took off her chains, and made it home safe in only 1.5 hours (12 miles, usually 30 minutes max.)

I was going to BBQ but it's REALLY coming down now, I'd have to shovel my way out there (and it just feels COLD) 27º and falling. Wake me in 63 days (summer starts)

not so easy to do.
15º below normal, (should be close to 60º) about 26º here now)
and it keeps coming down.
as long as the power stays on.
My son has a climbing class in Everett (12 miles through the worse of it) tomorrow at 2, if the roads are ok by then.

BTW Sash, just to the left of the walk, in the upper pic, is my contribution to the "Flowers for Sashwa" thread

Look quickly, they may not survive the ice age.

only 153 days until fall.

I was picking my son up from school in Fed Way at about 3pm and it started to come down in a rain/snow mix then let up to just rain.

Tomorrow should be fun, my daughters 4th bday party is tomorrow with 24 people.

You sure you didn't change the date on your camera? Those look more like winter pictures rather than spring pictures.

Please don't send that stuff down here.

Yup, roads were ok, mostly wet w/ occasional slush, snow and hail. driving not bad, except for that glowy thing in the sky nearly blinded me by popping out occasionally.

Nope, that's why I turned the date on, or nobody would believe it.
this is about the most snow we had all year at one time. around 8-9" deep, but a lot more fell, the ground was so warm it's melting from underneath. without the ground melt we'd probably have 12-14".
the tv says some more flurry until noon, when it should change to rain.
looks like some of our old flowering cherry trees lost a few branches
not a typical late april.

Wow! Our original forecast was for snow this morning, but, we woke up to a cloud free sky. It's clouded up since then and stayed cool, but no snow or rain. That's okay. I've still got 3 feet in the front yard that needs to melt so I can plant stuff!!

Now we have snow, sleet, rain, hail, grapel (little rolled up balls of snow, like hail that was too cold to melt) thunder, lightning, and sun in rapid succession.
upper air is very confused today

I was supposed to work on my home yesterday...

Here, most of the snow had melted by now, but I think it will still be enough for a new record.

It's just starting to affect us, the showers are just a couple of hours away at Leggett presently, and it looks to stay cold all week. It's only 42 right now in Redwood Valley, that's very cold for us this time of year!

Statement as of 4:21 AM PDT on April 19, 2008

... Unseasonably cold weather expected across northwest California
this weekend...

A cold area of low pressure aloft currently over British Colombia
will settle southwards over Oregon and Washington later this
afternoon.

Rain showers will begin to develop across northern portions of
northwest California this morning... with shower activity
increasing through the afternoon and evening hours for the
remainder of the region. Rain will begin to mix with snow later
this afternoon as unseasonably cold air filters into the region
through the day.

Snow levels will lower from around 3500 to 4000 feet in the morning
down to 2500 feet by the late afternoon. Snow levels will lower
further late Saturday night to between 1500 and 2500 feet. With
warm ground temperatures in place... only brief snow accumulations
of up to an inch are expected.

With low freezing levels... elevations down to the coast may see
small hail or a light snow mix in heavier showers Saturday night
and during the day on Sunday.

Freezing overnight temperatures are expected tonight and Sunday
night... especially in regions sheltered from wind. Efforts should
be undertaken to move or cover plants which are susceptible to the
cold. Motorists traveling through the region this weekend should
be prepared for cold temperatures... slippery and hazardous driving
conditions. For the latest weather information check NOAA Weather
Radio or www.Weather.Gov/Eureka.

Re: Spring in the NW????

It's only 38 here right now, for 8 PM on April 19th, that's abnormally cold for this area. The Vineyards are all starting to bud out, and the Pear Trees are in bloom, I'm sure those growers are not too happy tonight, I'll have to cover some things up in our yard for sure.
