Gasket for dodge colt '93

I need a little help, my sister has serious leakage on her car, it's a dodge colt '93, and I'm in charge of taking the car to the mechanic that will do the work. I was wondering if I can get the gaskets on the states (I'm on the Dominican Republic), cause the will certainly be of better quality.

This car is the same chassis as this photo on the link:

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:%279···oupe.jpg

the only difference is that our car is a 4 door, and the color is like a dark purple

anyway, I couldn't find any engine refence (it was dark), the only thing I could see is a "16 Valve" thing.

could you tell what is the engine this car has?

Re: Gasket for dodge colt '93

Based off of the NAPA online site - if you saw a 16 valve reference I would bet it has the 1.8L 4 banger.

Re: Gasket for dodge colt '93

wich engine model it is? I was looking at rockauto.com but they dont have it on the catalog. I saw a kit on ebay, but was just a head gasket kit, I want a complete gasket set, for a complete engine overhaul.

these are the ones I found. 2 different engines

If it is the 16 Valve 1.8 liter engine in a Colt GL Model (Engine Code "C" or Engine Family "C"). Look for a steel plate that is riveted to the firewall or strut towers that will tell you the engine code or engine family and size.

Note: Sealed Power, FelPro, Beck/Arnley (formerly WorldParts), and NAPA all are good quality gaskets if they are available for you locally and at a better price.

1993 : DODGE : COLT GL : 1.8L 1834cc 112 cubic inch L4 MFI (C) : Engine : Engine Kit Gasket Set

SEALED POWER Part # 2601821
16 valve engine; Gasket Kit; Head bolts not incl.; PermaDry® molded rubber valve cover gskt. incl.; Premium valve stem seals incl. -- $247.79

That is a Full Gasket set with every single thing except new head bolts and when they say that it usually means that the head bolts are "torque to yield" and need to be replaced each time the cylinder head is removed.

Those are here:

FEL-PRO Part # ES71209
16 valve engine; Head bolts w/Washers; REPLACEMENT RECOMMENDED -- $20.79

If you prefer Fel-Pro Gaskets like I do, then you can get the Head Set, Head Bolts and add the oil pan gasket plus the two crankshaft seals (Front Crankshaft Seal, Rear Main Bearing Seal and Water Pump gasket if need) to make it a full set.

16 valve engine; Canada; Head bolts not incl.; PermaDry® molded rubber valve cover gskt. incl.; Premium valve stem seals incl. -- $156.79

Now if you only just need other individual gaskets instead (Oil Pan, Valve Cover, Water Pump, Camshaft Seal, Rear Main Bearing Seal, of a full kit, look here:

the full gasket sets are really expensive, I was looking to spend less than $100... I would have to see how they are here

It very well could be under a $100.00 if you don't need the complete overhaul gasket set (full set) or a full head set (upper head set). It gets real expensive, real quick on Japanese engines especially those with more than 2 valves per cylinder since that is more oil seals in the set (at roughly $6.00 to $8.00 each times 12 valves), then the seals in either of the gasket sets are worth almost $75.00 to $100.00 right there out of the total price.

The Million Dollar question is, what are you going to replace and do you plan on rebuilding the cylinder head or the entire engine with new seals or are you just replacing a few gaskets like exhaust and/or valve cover and/or oil pan if only they are leaking and need replacement.

Now if you are going to rebuild the engine from the ground up, you want the machine shop to supply the gasket set as they can order what is called a white box of premium gaskets called a kit set that is only sold to engine builders and machine shops as the price is sometimes 30 to 50 cheaper, but the gaskets in the box are the quality ones (usually Fel-Pro).

What exactly is leaking on the vehicle?

Re: Gasket for dodge colt '93

well, I inspected the engine, and oil was was coming out everywhere, also, my sister said the last time oil and filter was changed was about a year ago. The car's exhaust smells/looks like is burning a bit of oil too, so I understand is best to do a complete overhaul.

so far, I found the engine code/model is 4G93, so this is what I found at ebay:

I worked on a 80's Toyota like that a very long time ago. It was covered in oil from the valve cover area on down and was dripping from the entire length of the engine. It needed a $5.00 dollar part to fix it.

The oil pump is mounted on the front of the engine and is crankshaft driven. The o-ring between the oil pump and the block was bad and it oil leaked steadily from the top of the oil pump when running, but you could not pin-point it until after I used a gallon of mineral spirits and a compressed air suction/spray gun to clean the engine top and bottom leaving it dry as a bone thus making the finding of the long running leak very easy to find and fix. It was years of driving that the oil had spread everywhere by the front fan, the road draft created by highway driving and the pull of gravity to where it initially looked like a bunch of places were leaking, but is was simply one medium leak let gone un-repaired for too long.

I suggest you have the engine cleaned unless you can do it yourself to pinpoint the leaks, then run a compression test to determine engine fitness. After that take it to get a second opinion from a technician on the condition of the engine and where the oil leaks are actually located.

Re: Gasket for dodge colt '93

I forgot to add that she has to continiusly add oil to the car because of the leakage.

Dr Olds, I'm just guessing because of the condition of the engine, wich looks pretty bad, but actually I will, first of all, to take the car to the guy that will do the work, so he can give me his opinion about the work due on the engine.

I assumed it will need new rings, because of the exhaust symptoms I wrote about in my last post. So, if new rings are in order, why not change everything ?? specially after she said no new filter for a year (who knows if more).

Thanks

Do you have access to remanufactured engines or low mileage pulls (used low mileage engines)? It may be cheaper in the long run if you are essentially looking to replace the engine.

Re: Gasket for dodge colt '93

Thanks for your help again doctor Olds. The Mechanic said he could get authentic replacement gaskets and parts (not china generic ones) and he got the job done.

the engine was leaking oil everywhere. I dont know why the car owner waited this long to have the car cheked . Also, when one hit the gas, car was like smog hell.

When he was taking apart the engine, the mechanic called me, to see how was the cylinder block, and on his opinion, it was good, he adjusted something on the pistons, new rings, had the block and head machined, and everything is good so far! no more leaks, and the engine feels strong now.

Its essientally a rebadged Mitsubishi Mirage, so do a search out for that model as well, could get more results than just searching for the Dodge.

The manufacturers know it is a Mitsu engine and looking in the Fel-Pro catalog shows the same exact part numbers are being used so there would not be any savings telling someone at a parts store to look up a Mitsubishi versus the Dodge Colt. It's the same catalog numbers......
