[BT] COX suspended my account (Scottsdale, AZ)

Just got of the phone with COX ISP.
My account is suspended due to copyright violation.
Apparently, "someone" downloaded The Wire by HBO.
To be honest I did receive 5 email warnings previously.
So, this is my first strike and at three I'm out of ISP.
Crap!!!
I have reason to believe that the problems are due to use of Azuerus BT client. Plus I'm not much of an uploader. Seeder yes - no uploads, though.
Does that sounds right?
Just thought to let you all know...

Might want to think about newsgroups. no uploading required.
its best to go with a premium provider as cox's highwinds crap will frustrate you pretty fast.

Bad idea, especially since Peerguardian doesn't protect you from anything. It still lists several of my servers as MPAA traps -- even though they're anything but that.

Here's a tip:
If you don't want to get busted for uploading/seeding, use something that doesn't require it!

Looks like its time to switch to newsgroups instead. No uploading, seeding or sharing required. A show like the Wire is easily obtained via an NSP but you are unlikely to find some of the more obscure things that are likely available via BT instead.

Although eveyone says peerguardian doesnt work a friend of mine received a few COX cease letters from torrents also so he started using peerguardian and the letters stopped. Hes always seeding about 6 torrents and has been letter free for over two years now and all he uses is public trackers. By no means will it give you 100% protection but it does help. I think if anything the blocklists block more then needed then not enough. IMHO anti piracy companies are not going to take the time and effort to switch IP's when there are plenty of people not blocking it. If you like torrents use it and then if you get your second warning I advise just not to use torrents and switch to another means of getting your content.

The Wire is a great show. It's well worth getting your connection suspended over.

Hope you enjoy the show as much as I do.

Wasn't the wire cancelled by HBO? sounds like they want to protect the overpriced boxed set dvd's.

When it comes to enforcement of copyright infringement,
including forcing of DRM down consumers' throats, HBO is
one of the worst out there.

That seems rightfully so since they don't make any money from advertisers like other networks.

use peer guardian. and check for the tutorial to make sure your BT client is configured correctly. if you do that and you d/l from a PRIVATE tracker you should have no problems.

Why would using peer guardian help him? It doesn't do anything. It's a waste of cpu cycles.

I love how they once had giganews.com blacklisted. The guys on their irc channel are clueless when a issue popped out as well and they were quick to ban users questioning why legit websites and hosting companies were blacklisted.

Then again you guys are using bittorent so you guys don't know any better.

Nice analogy and agreed. Peer Guardian is absolute rubbish for its intended use. The lists seem compiled by kids who gets whims of suspect bad IP ranges(Even one of my seeding servers was blocked and its IP range was also host to a fair number of torrent sites(85.17.x.x)). My later seeding servers were out of their block range, but you get the point. Even worse-the copyright people can torrent from home and bust people. Are we going to block every residential IP now? Now from the worse to the ugly-a former copyright enforcer was interviewed on some of his methods. One was to identify heavy downloaders by identifying those who use PG and similar software. It's as simple as them using a residential IP that's not blocked and purposely connecting to the same torrent with a blocked IP, as well. Bottom line is PG offers no protection and may block innocent IPs due to what seems like children compiling the lists.

My advice is to see if your ISP offers free newsgroups. If they do, great. If not, then you could buy a subscription. The price you pay for all you can eat warez is actually quite reasonable. Max speed all the time and no copyright probes(unlike with torrents). Use a free site like »www.nzbindex.nl to download NZB files. You can browse for them like torrents and they load in your newsreader much the same way. You load the nzb, then it starts downloading from the necessary groups to get the files. Newsgroups are really as easy as torrents, if you use them in that manner.

Good luck.

Azureus has a plugin called SafePeer. How does that compare to PeerGuardian?

Newgroups are great for mainstream files. Like someone else said BT is better sometimes for the more obscure items.

Plus with a good newsgroup server, you can max out your connection on downloading.

They're both useless.
