Who's using their own cable modem?

I've just about had it with my SA Webstar from WOW. Several times a day, it will malfunction and get into this weird state where all lights are off except the PC light, which blinks. Even the power light is off, which should never happen. During this state, there's no connectivity. Even a power cycle will not help, but it usually resets and resolves itself within 15 minutes or so.

When this happened a few months ago, WOW sent out a tech, who did nothing because the modem was working fine when he got there.

It's worked OK since then until last week, now it's doing it again. Another call to WOW, they said they would send someone in a few days.. a few hours later they call and leave a message saying there was an outage in the area, all fixed now and they went ahead and cancelled the tech call for me. GREAT, except my problem isn't outage related and it's still happening.

So do I call a 3rd time and demand a new modem, or just buy my own for $60 or so? One advantage of a purchased one would be the ability to see diagnostic info, which WOW disables on the Webstars.

Who's using their own cable modem, any thoughts?

If you get one, make sure it's DOCSIS 2, otherwise you're wasting your money.

I would ask WOW for a new modem. I had a SA from Time Warner and had the same problem. When I switched to WOW!, I no longer had a SA. Instead, I have an Arris. Request one of those.

I used a Motorola surfboard modem for 3 years with Sigecom before WOW bought them out last year. I used it for several months after they did the WOW switchover. Last fall I had some massive problems that were not modem related at all with my internet connection dropping me from online games, but WOW would not give me any technical support unless I rented a modem from them.

Do you have voip? I do and was under the impression from WOW only the arris were for voip. I know before the voip I had an SA with nary a problem. Just curious if it had changed.

I am in Cleveland and I had an Arris both before and after I got VOIP. It is the only modem they had available to me in Cleveland.

I was having the same problem a few weeks ago. I had a SB5210. Worked fine since day one then noticed once evening when I was installing a new UPS, I unplugged it, but it would not go back on line. Only the Power and PC light would come one. Letting it sit for 5 minutes once got it back online but it made me wonder WTH. So, I unplugged it again one day, same problem. This time, after 30 minutes, it never came back on. I ended up installed a Webstar DP110 (OLD OLD OLD) but after 3 resets, it fired up. Called WOW and changed the MAC. Used it for about 2 weeks, then put the SB back online. It came up. Then, right after wow said they would bump me to 6mbps for not switching to CC, it failed again. Had to put the webstar back on. And again, it took a few resets to get it to fire up. After talking to WOW, they said "we don't support customers modems for over 4megs. Ok. thanks . So, thank god for the Door 2 Door guy pimping CC. I switched back. Put the SB on and BAM! Back on line. But I also got CC's phone so I have a new modem now and mine are on the shelf.

Mine never would resolved itself on it own. I always had to secure power, energize and watch the lights. If it didn't go into diag mode within 10 seconds of adding power, it wasn't going to happen.

Weird.. Is it possible for cable network-side problems to cause a modem to act that wacky? I would expect if there's cable-side problems, the cable light would be out and that's it. On mine, the Power light goes out too.

Sounds like TC1's SurfBoard didn't fare any better.

I don't know what these guys are doing at WOW. They told me they wouldnt support my Motorola SB either. it had worked just fine for YEARS, and suddenly one day my speeds are slow. I looked at the config file and it had me on a much lower config than my plan was billing me for. They told me that randomly the system will notice my modem is underperforming and kick me down to a lower config file, all the while ofcourse leaving my billing plan at the same higher cost plan. Worked fine for years as Sigecom and for a good while until they cut everything over to their crap ass equipment.

My modem looses the cable light, but the thing is still online and surfs fine. I've been trying to work with WOW on this for about 2 months now, I haven't gotten anywhere. I haven't heard back from anyone there in a few weeks now.

There is something messed up on their end. Most of my issues started back when they had the power problem. But your issue is something different.

Maybe they haven't gotten back to you because they are spending more time trying to win back people who jumped ship. I've gotten 2 calls in the since March 18 (my switch date) from WOW trying to get me to come back.

I've always had a border line signal due to splitters and TV's on the system. But even after taking everything down to just the cable modem line, I was sure the problem was upstream from my modem. Maybe the Motorola was more sensitive to signal loss then the Scientific Atlantic modem I ended up using till I switched providers. Maybe WOW is "upgrading" their service..
