[DSL] DSL Modem/Router?

I just got a d-link router so I could share my DSL connection with a new computer. However, after a lot of hair pulling and searching, I had to set my DSL modem/router (as I learned) into bridge mode in order to connect it to the router. The reason given was that, otherwise, I was stacking two routers on top of each other.

I have a XyZel p660r-elnk DSL modem, but it only has one ethernet port, stock from my ISP. At the time I got the router (about $50), the same place had a d-link ethernet switch for $15 (after $30 instant rebate). Would the switch have worked on my modem, saving myself $35 in the process? Could my modem have worked as my router?

Yes, you could have used just a 10/100 Multi-port Switch as it is explained in the »EarthLink DSL FAQ since the ZyXEL P660R series are Routers inside the ADSL2+ Modems.

If you've just recently gotten Earthlink ADSL service in 2006 the newest Modem is the ZyXEL P660R-ELNK Router for ADSL (also supports the LPV - DSL & Home Phone Service packaged bundle's ADSL2+ requirement) and the P660R-61 Router for bundled Home Phone and DSL service (aka LPV - Line Powered Voice and ADSL2+ DSL type). Both have built in PPPoE and both are preset to support 32 Private IP addresses (meaning up to 32 PCs) on the LAN if you just add a multi-port 10/100 Switch. The P660Rs appear to be fully functional Routers (all P660R versions). There is also a newer ZyXEL P660R-D1 that may be sent out in 2007. [Buying Advice: Don't buy a multi-port 10/100 Hub instead as the now very small price difference is not worth the overall performance difference when compared to a faster multi-port Switch]

There is a Earthlink DSL Forum that you may want to also read.
