I'm not happy. I'm not happy that I have to opt out everytime I use a different browser/computer/cookies are cleared. Embarq, can you do any better than that? Per account opt out? |

| reply to seropith I have actually been informed by the Vice President, Law and Chief Privacy Officer, after I contacted the company...
EMBARQ does not currently offer preference advertising services, and thus there is no need for you to take any steps to opt out of this service. If the company determines in the future to offer such services, customers would be notified and offered a choice of whether to participate. EMBARQ takes its customers' privacy very seriously and endeavors to ensure information about our customers remains secure and anonymous. I'm inclined to believe this, and I see no issue anymore. |

| reply to seropith Hi, seropith
I'm not sure I understand the original post. Is this thread about the way we are directed to an advertising page when we enter a bad URL into the location bar of the web browser, or is it referring to something else?
Thanks for any clarification. -- oz |

Embarq's privacy policy page - complete with opt-out instructions - leads one to believe this technology is already being implemented.
Perhaps one of the Embarq employees who frequent this forum can back up the no named VP's statement?
Better yet - have the VP post here. |

| reply to seropith Considering it's already in their privacy policy that they can do it, someone saying they aren't doesn't hold much water. And as far as notification goes, that too would be the notification.

| Here is another very interesting section:
Preference Advertising. EMBARQ may use information such as the websites you visit or online searches that you conduct to deliver or facilitate the delivery of targeted advertisements. The delivery of these advertisements will be based on anonymous surfing behavior and will not include users' names, email addresses, telephone numbers, or any other Personally Identifiable Information.
You may choose to opt out of this preference advertising service. By opting out, you will continue to receive advertisements as normal; but these advertisements will be less relevant and less useful to you. If you would like to opt out, click here.
Seems to spell it out rather clearly to me. And there is an opt-out link as well. -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

»Marketers: Opt-In Would Be 'Armageddon'
Last month somebody at Embarq went on record to say they haven't rolled out their latest invasion of privacy:
»bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/0···surfing/
At Embarq, Debra Peterson, the company spokeswoman, e-mailed this statement, saying she would entertain no further questions:
Like other companies, we are evaluating behavioral marketing tools, but we have not decided whether to move forward with them. Our Privacy Policy anticipates and alerts customers to possible future use of these tools, and offers customers the opportunity to simply and quickly opt out. EMBARQ takes its customers privacy very seriously and we take every precaution to ensure information about our customers remains secure and anonymous. Our eagle-eyed sysadmin at work hasn't seen any injected ad activity yet.
But I'm near certain it's just a matter of time until we do - unless we get some laws to stop them from trashing the fourth amendmemnt. |

Regarding this blurb in The Register April 10, 2008
»www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/10···rgeting/
Multiple American ISPs are sharing customer data with outside firms that deal in so-called behavioral ad targeting, and according to one of these firms, the Silicon Valley-based NebuAd, roughly 10 per cent of all US web surfers are affected.
These ad companies, which also include the Sonora, California-based Front Porch, won't say which ISPs have adopted their services. But two internet service providers, the Georgia-based Knology and the Sprint-spin-off Embarq, admit to using such platforms on a test basis Can you tell us if any test subjects are/were your customers?

This is a message from Lamont with Embarq Customer Support. We would first like to thank you for your business and apologize for any frustration you are having with the Embarq service. Please review this link »www.pcworld.com/article/id,12458···cle.html . The information in the article may help you to secure your browsing. We also do provide the option to opt out of the Embarq ISP advertising. If you clear your cookies you will be opted back in, until you opt out again. Please reply to the following email address with your phone number if you have any additional concerns about this issue. We strive for complete customer satisfaction and with your help we can improve our service. Thank you for using Embarq, your complete communications solution. What ISP advertising is Lamont with Embarq talking about?
---
Finally,
According to DSL Reports, NebuAd's CEO Bob Dyke has this to say about cookies:
»Ask DSLReports.com: What Is NebuAD?
"The advertising industry believes that about forty percent of people delete the cookies about once a month," That suggests NebuAd believes cookie based opt-out is pretty ineffective.
Do you think maybe that's why they chose it? |
