Upload is a tiny bit slow, but download is actually faster than advertised here. (pro package, beam 17)

Backup, just in case.

I overlapped my starband system for a while when I first got wildblue in 2005 too, just in case anything went wrong.

So far I haven't had to use wildblue as backup as I haven't had a minute of downtime on the TDS DSL since I got it, though I've downloaded a couple of GB on the wildblue (the DSL is 3 MB so with it and wildblue I now have 4.5 Mbps; on the upload side my TDS DSL is 512 kbps, real world around 400 kbps and my wildblue is 256 kbps real world around 230 kbps, so I can also use both to upload if I have multiple large things to go up; and I can either use the firefox quick proxy switch to do a test on one or the other or I can open IE set to proxy to the squid box connected to the wildblue modem if I want to download something at 1500 kbps while I also download at 3000 kbps over the dsl )

I guess there's also a touch of nostalgia mixed in because I relied on satellite for so many years since 2001 (and looking at the wildblue dish in the yard out my window always thought the idea of sending a signal to the satellite 22,000 miles in orbit and back to canada and back was very cool) so I'm not in a real hurry to pull the plug on it.

I figure I make half my income online so having a backup Internet connection makes sense.
