AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

7.5 completed a scan in about 40 minutes. 8 takes about three hours. Anyone else noticing this or did mine install somehow wrong?

AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

I'm sorry to say this but the older AVG was so much better. No it just makes it feel more like Vista. The interface is nice and polished, almost like the newer Spyware Blaster but the product is so damn slow now. I used to hate Avast but now even that is probably faster than the new AVG. I'm also not a big fan of the new Link Scanner they added, seemed to cause so many problems on my system, and that was on a clean and updated install mind you. Come on Grisoft, get your act together!

Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

Yes, I have heard a similar story from a reliable source about thirty minutes ago. The affected computer crawled after installation of AVG 8.0. The user went back to Avira and everything now works well.

My firewall has stopped responding due to AVG's memory usage and the whole system slowed down then crashed!

S L O W ! ! !

Just a slug - installed it ( needed to edit ewido out of the registry ), then found that things randomly crashed, and web browsing or going to my usual sites slowed to a crawl or hung.

Uninstalled, went back to build 7.5.524.

This APP is not ready for prime time - hope they fix it.

As always, thanks to BBR posters for alerting everyone to potential problems. I DL'd AVG 8.0 to my test rig this morning but have not yet installed it. Now I think that I shall bide my time.

Weird. I haven't really noticed any difference in performance on my rig and it's not a box one would call "up-to-date":

1.3ghz Athlon
512mb PC133 (yeah... you're reading it right)
VIA KT133A chipset

I installed it this morning and everything is just as it was last night.

Hmmmm. It only takes 18 minutes to do a full scan of entire pc - 70,000+ files - don't see anything slow about that.
But when I had 7.5, it took 47 minutes to scan the exact same files.

Lonnie

Did a scan...85,795 objects - 24 minutes and 41 seconds. Still, that isn't bad at all.

Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

Yeah, the SCAN was quick enough ( along with the scary reg hacks " ActiveX Compatability " from SB S&D and SWB kill bits ), but it slagged the speed of my laptop on all sites - Weather.com even crapped out, fer C.S.!.

I like a quick and thorough on-demand SCAN, but the resident AV sluggardlyness ( I know, but it sounds good ) is a dealbreaker.

1.7 GHz Celeron
XP SP2
2 GB RAM

I have a faster desktop, but it too shall wait and see.

And having to delete Reg entries for Ewido / AVGAS to get 8.0 to load is piss poor - it just ain't ready - Sorry.

@omcastbusiness.net

I am not sure what OS you have but Windows xp alone has far more than 70,000+ "object"' because that is what the program is scanning. Typically most people have more like 300,000+ objects. The P.C. I am on now has been scanning for 3.5 hours and probably has another 2 to go. I am letting the program run to the end to see exactly how long it takes. It is configured to run the fasteset speed it can. The P.C. is not very good, and I wouldn't mind more time just not like this. I am deciding whether to deploy the new AVG 8 for my business and so far a resounding NO is the answer. We have been very happy with AVG 7.5 for years. I put the new AVG in the classes with Norton and all the other far too agreesive dogs with nothing more than a name. Just like Vista a shiny dog that cannot walk without assistance! A person or user should be able to still use the P.C. during a scan. Maybe the performance is slower but again SOFTWARE is supposed to work with us for productivity. We are not supposed to alter our work for it. A big loss for AVG!

I realize AVG 8 scans for spyware as well (hence the longer scan time).Should be an option for scanning for viruses and another option just for spyware.

I've liked AVG for a long time,it was always lightweight,easy on resources,fast,and did what it was supposed to do.I'll now be looking elsewhere for an antivirus solution.

So long AVG

Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

Yes, I agree. There should be a spyware option. I use spybot and that is good enough for me. AVG gives many false positives on the spyware check. Newbies think this is good because it "finds" something. What a laugh. I am made because I liked the OLD Avg.

Mikeytron

@omcastbusiness.net

Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

Besides the Link Scanner issues I have noticed an improvment if you go to Tools, then Advanced Settings, then Resident Shield and UNCHECK "Scan Potentially Unwanted Programs and Spyware Threats". Only Boot sector and Hueristics and Resident Should should be checked. I went from 4.5 hours to 3.12 hours in scan time ON THE EXACT SAME p.c. and also resource losses were not as bad. It made a BIG DIFFERENCE! The link scanner issue and spyware detection going on along with the anti-virus check is the killer. If I ran Spybot while the old AVG 7.5 was running it was a killer as well, and that's why I wouldn't do it. One size fits all doesn't work here. I have seen some interesting posts how other users circumvent the AVG but that is far too much to do to make a program run O.K. When you have to do that it means the software has missed its mark. Again we don't need spyware checks in AVG.

Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

Excuse the dumb question.

But, won't unchecking that lower the effectiveness of your scan?

Ken

Mikeytron

@aol.com

Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

Not a dumb question. The answer is yes and no. When you scan your P.C. the software just doesn't scan every file unless you tell it to do so. Virus software uses intelligence by the program and developer to scan the most effective way to find "known" viruses as identified by the program's database. By having the most updated virus database will take out many viruses in the "resident" portion of the program. It gets complicated on the software side but viruses are all about money and exploitation these days. We pay money to software companies to ensure that we are up to date with our virus definitions. Believe it or not no matter what program you pick and as long as you scan regularly and keep the Anti-virus program updated you are good to go. Its when you slack off that the problems occur. Also empty you Internet Explore cache and temp files regularly because that is where the general malware likes to reside.

I have a mini ITX machine with Epia 5000 Motherboard that I use as a file server. Not a powerful machine but has served me well ans is extremely low power consumption.

Under 7.5 a full system scan used to take bout 4 hours so from 3am to about 7am the machine was very slow.

Since "upgrading" to version 8, the full system scan now takes 17 hours !!! This means the machine is now totally unusable and I will be looking for alternative AV software

Forrer

@emc.com
Its not the SCAN that is slow, its the entire PC usuage after installation. The AVG works amazingly well, but nothing else gets by with the serious speed reduction.

I installed it on a couple of older PC's and one laptop on my network and do not see any significant hit on performance. Scanning probably takes a little longer but I do not set automatic scans; just did one after installation.

But here's the difference.

I did a "Custom Install" and unchecked all the boxes except the real-time scanner. No web checker, no email scanner, no surf-safe, etc.

None of those features make you any safer because the real-time scanner will flag anything on access. Don't install them and you should avoid associated problems.

I tried custom install and unfortunately the link scanner still installs, even tried Avg's post about not installing it. Apparently this cannot be done with the free version. Please tell me I am wrong!

According to the email I received from Grisoft a little over a month ago, you can't skip the linkscanner in the Pro version as well. "Note that AVG LinkScanner component is a core AVG component and can not be excluded from the installation" is exactly how it was worded.

This works - I've condensed from the AVG FAQ and input the actual install filename I downloaded into the command line:
-------------------------------------
How to install AVG without LinkScanner

If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, or uninstall this component from your program, please proceed as follows:

Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.

save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\

open menu Start -> Run

type ( copy and paste is easier )

c:\avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch

The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component.
---------------------

I did not install the E-mail Scanner, and created 2 shortcuts:

Update shortcut: ( target ) - for silent update

"C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgupd.exe" /sched=

Location of update files: ( target )

"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update\download"

I installed on my slower laptop ( 1.7 Ghz Celeron Toshiba, XP SP2 ) and it appears to only marginally slow browsing - haven't tested scans but I do this on-demand anyway.

Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

Thanks, that is exactualy the way I did install, from the rename shortcut, and it worked. I must the linkscanner was really slowing down my system. Granted it is 8 years old but hey I have never had to fix one single piece of hardware todate.

AVG 8 is not using any more memory then the previous version and scan time might be a few minutes longer on my machine.

I use ZAP also and AVG 8 is getting along fine with it.

Installed the full free AVG 8 and did notice the avgsrx.exe run at about 41,000 but when unchecking linkscanner under components tab it dropped to around 21,800---have not noticed any slow downs on a fresh install of xpp sp3---have not done a full scan yet. How long b4 7.5 goes away---will stay with it on the other boxen for a while......

I had a pop-up that indicated 7.5 wouldn't be supported after the end of this month. Who knows, that may change.

I just got the popup that says 7.5 won't be supported after the end of this month today.

I wonder if this is a mistake, and they mean december, not may.

When AVG 8 reached beta, I looked at the list of known issues/bugs, and soon after that, it released as final. I knew it wasn't a good sign. If 7.5 isn't supported after this month, after a week or so, I'll either upgrade AVG to 8.0.latest build, or ditch it for Avast or Avira.

@net.do

I have now installed the AVG 8 as suggested in Falcon04's post. (see below)
To be sure that AVG 8 was not slowing me down, I installed it on my old laptop, IBM T23, 1.1 processor, 512 ram and a slowpoke 4,200 rpm hard drive.
I have tested an retested, and I cannot feel any slowdown whatsoever, comparing it to the 7.5, nor to Avira.
It may take a bit more ram than the previous, but that's the only difference that I see. (Once warmed up and calmed down, 55 megs of ram with XP)
I have noticed that it takes a fair bit less ram on my Vista puter, maybe 35 megs of ram total.

Considering that this version does more and handles spyware too, I have to give it a thumbs up.
PS: Full scans take no longer than with the 7.5, maybe even less time.

My scanning isn't any slower, but I immediately realized that it was slowing my browsing to a painful crawl.

All I had to do was open the AVG user interface, open the "Link scanner" section and disable it. That completely took care of the problem.

Phally

@xs4all.nl

I installed it last week and scanning isn't much faster/slower, but the start-up time of Windows almost doubled!!

Setup:
AMD Athlon X2 6400+
3x 1GB Kingston HyperX 800mhz 4-4-4-12 2T

Windows Vista Business x86 SP1

I guess i will be buying NOD32 soon...

Disabled linkscanner thru firefox addons.

Scan settings set to default. About 150,000 items in 27 minutes.

No slowdown. No problems other than the add banner at bottom of control center window to buy AVG 8.0. Maybe it will go away eventually. But, not a big deal. Updates are faster.

8.0 uninstalled 7.5 during the install process. No problems
