Re: AVG 8 EXTREMELY slow?

If you are using an AMD processor and are having slowdowns under Windows XP or Vista with AVG installed, try installing the AMD Dual Core Optimizer. It made a noticeable difference on my PC (but AVG remains a bit slow still). Most sluggishness is gone now. However, this only made a difference to the real-time performance, that is, on-demand scans were not really improved.

You can get the Dual Core Optimizer here:

I'm getting sick of avgrsx taking up most of my cpu time at boot up, I've been using AVG for a LONG time, but this has got me thinking about uninstalling it

I can confirm that AVG is really slow. I use v8.0.138 and it needs many seconds before any window opens.
It's a pity because I like its interface, but my PC is almost freezed since I installed it (I have an Athlon 1400Mhz).
I think I'll try Avira, I hope they'll fix AVG speed problem soon.

actually AVG 8 may not be that bad if you know what to disable.
1. check off the link scanner in the installation process
2. I don't know if the "scan potentially unwanted programs and spyware threats" feature will slow down the system a lot, you can try to check off this function and see if you want to.

I just uninstalled 7.5 and installed 8 and did the two things above. Now the 8 is not that bad. It may use slightly more resource than 7.5, I don't know, but it is more acceptable now.

I installed avg 8 on my lap top and it didn't slow it down it killed it completely. 7+ minutes to desk top and as for shutting down (windows is shutting down page) I gave up after 2 hours and hit the off button.
Took avg 8 off, put avira on and now it's like diarrhoea with daps on.

agree. AVG 8 took close to 2 hr to finish 40+ GB files. It did great job btw, better than most of the scanners. i hope it will become faster with updates.

I'm really unhappy about AVG 8.0.
Things are REALLY slow. It's almost impossible to use my PC.
Start menu appears after 5-10 seconds. Multiple windows almost freeze the system.
I was very happy about AVG7, now I think Ill try Avira (crossing my fingers).

Try this.....

*Comodo Firewall Pro*

You can't get any better for *FREE*

If you are on DSL or Cable use a Router as a hardware firewall & turn on the Vista built in firewall.

If your intention is to block outgoing traffic than the above is a great solution, otherwise you do not need it.

AVG is still working great for me.. 8.138a1332

AVG 8 internet security works ok for the most part but the firewall is causing my online games to hiccup at regular intervals. It also slows down the speed tests here on dslreports. The only solution I have found is to disable the firewall then my online games run fine. anyone else had this problem with avg firewall? Or can you recommend a decent vista 64 bit firewall?

avg tech support has been no help.

thx

I turned off the link scanner feature of AVG Free 8, and it helped IE to speed up, probably since it does not have to also go get info on the many links to websites a page refers to, and where it searches for the issues. The scan time did not improve though.

Thanks for your recommendations. I will give them a try.

To be honest with you (and only my personal opinion of course), I think your best option is to dump AVG 8 all together, and go with either Avast or Avira. (If you're still interested in a free app).
FWIW I am testing the free versions of these AVs out at the moment and they are both performing well. Avast has more bells and whistles but in Avira you can schedule regular scans. IMO either one would be a good choice to replace AVG.

There were several other threads concerning AVG 8 (in addition to this one).

Sorry, but for me at least, that's my best and only suggestion.

I was a faithful AVG user for many years.
I also tried every tweak in the book with AVG 8 (installing without the 'Link Scanner', etc), and it was still a disaster as far as I'm concerned.
And unless they've drastically changed something since I got rid of it, removing unwanted "features" is generally not much of an option...with a couple of exceptions.

I'm using Avira AntiVir now, and am pretty happy with it.

If you look around a little...(do a search here in the forums for "AVG 8"), I think you'll find that many people have abandoned AVG 8, and moved on to something else.

Good luck.

I recently added a new 4 port USB-2 card, a USB WD MyBook hard drive, and a USB LG DVD-writer with Lightscribe. I then did a full system backup, along with some duplicate music files and personal documents. I also have several MS system state backups. I jumped from about 800K objects to 1139K objects. The scan time changed from 3 hours to 8 hours using the AVG-Free 8; I start it a 5am. It does not always like the huge backup files at all, and hangs for hours there. I suppose it is still scanning them.

I also did an XP SP 3 upgrade since then (forced on me by Microsoft and the new hardware guys, I might add.) I have a 9-year-old P3-800mhz, 768MB ram, with a dual display and 1.5M DSL internet link. It was working fine until the AVG-Free 8 stuff for sure. During the day, when the scan is not running, avgrsx.exe pumps the cpu to 100% usage and brings the screens to a halt for minutes at a time. It also seems to not like the current Flash player in IE7. AVG-Free 8 uses about 54,000K all the time.

Any suggestions? Do I need to do an uninstall and then a reinstall eliminating some of the new (and nasty) AVG-Free 8 features?

Thanx.

Turned off link scanner (gimmicky!) and resident (evil) shield so far.. The resident shield meant opening large files like movies took up to a minute while avg inspected them. Didn't used to happen with 7.5.

Oh and the annoying 'MS-windows-style-update-manager-icon' with a big red exclamation mark if you disable anything - hi fallootin' nonsense!!!

Bad work gri-soft. I used to be so full of praise for AVG. Keep it real!!!!
If you're using the latest install, try looking in the Advanced Settings. There you'll find Ignore Faulty Conditions where you can make the red exclamation mark go away for each component you decide to disable

Does the new version work with FAT32 systems? (W2K SP4 on FAT 32).

There is no clear indication about this. Updates and scanning were not working on FAT 32 systems in the first version.

I am having the same issue. With an external HD, it is taking about 11 hrs to scan both HD's. That is insane. I start at 1:00 am and it ends around 1:00 pm. What can be done about this? Any ideas?
Thanks
Mike
