another Mikrotik Board and the end of the RB333

Click for full size
RB/333 is EOL. RB/333 is replaced by RB/433- they have same form factor and layout of
interfaces, so they will fit in same enclosures. RB/433 has powerful
Atheros CPU, that's about the same speed as RB/333. Attached is RB/433
brochure.

I like the way they are going, the boards keep getting faster at a lower price.

i agree while im a fan of the rb333, more horsepower @ a lower price is a change in the right direction

I was just getting used to the rb333, it practically just came out!

Of course Im open to cheaper and faster!

I don't get it, their small scale cpe/ap and their high performance ap have the same processor and memory?

There has been a lot of churn in Mikrotik hardware since the X86-based RB200 in 2003.

By contrast, the original X86-based PC Engines WRAP boards finally went away after AMD discontinued the chip. I think those may be the only boards that could run the most firmware options - Mikrotik, Wili, Ikarus, Star-OS, etc. I hope the new faster ALIX X86 boards (which have same footprint option as WRAP) will also be tested by all firmware vendors.

I am the fan of the alix series from Pc Engines.
More performance with higher horsepower like 500mhz with 256Mb memory embeeded 2 mpci + 2Lan +Cf slot with lots of supported software even better priced like 130$.
I definately will use the Alix with whatever soft init.

Thanks Pascal..

If this is the same processor that is used in RB411 then also RB411 should be faster than RB333.

Is that so? I somehow don't see that.

But you know, marketing is a great thing.

According to their spec sheet the RB411 CPE and RB433 high performance AP use the exact same 300 Mhz atheros processor. This means that yes the RB411 is faster than the RB333 which is probably why they discontinued it.

That's what I am saying, it's not faster. It's much slower.

So a 300 Mhz Atheros is much slower than a 333Mhz power pc? I find that odd given that the design of the Atheros has shown that it is more powerful than other 400 Mhz designs currently in use.

I have a new alix 500mhz board sitting on my desk here, nice with 2 PCI slots, ran mikrotik just fine, but I tried with 2 different mini pci radio cards and it fell flat on its face once you enabled them (power problems). I learned afterwards this is a well documented problem

Yes, it is slower.

Use Mikrotik BTest to run small packet UDP test through two boards and you'll see the difference.

Actually odd thing is that people would believe the hype that MIPS based system with lower clock could be faster than PPC based one. But hey, if MT people are telling it is, then it must be, right?

I don't have any to test because I have held off buying any because something was fishy. I can say this, if the chips include some kind of specific network acceleration it is feasible that a slower processor could out perform as faster one in the specific tasks it is accelerated for. Since Mikrotik hasn't posted any data for the boards, I will reserve judgement for the future.

Those ALIX boards look awesome, does anyone know whether they are ever going to support 802.3af?

Are there any indoor cases for those that support a PCI card on a riser?

What OS are you going to run on that board?
