How do you like Hardy?

Well, it's been out a week now and I haven't even thought about upgrading yet. Truth is, I've been too busy to mess with it, and will be for another few days at least. I know some of you must have jumped in by now, I wanted to hear what you think of it so far.

I'm not wild about the idea of Firefox 3 yet, although I understand the rationale behind that decision. I've seen a few issues mentioned, but that's to be expected with any release.

So, care to share your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

FF3 runs close enough to FF2, no issue for me.

Sound card (SBLive5.1/emu10k1) capture is broken. Never had a problem back to Dapper then boom... I think Ubuntu's ALSA took a dump on a lot of folks. Yet to be diagnosed.

I HATE this bug... especially when diagnosing:
»Hardy Heron *.desktop lauching bug
First thing I tried was FF2 - no help.

EDIT: Oh yeah... I'm going back to Gutsy if I can't resolve some of this soon.

I updated three boxes and a laptop. There was a range of different video cards and cpus. Mostly painless with the following problems:

1) Firefox 3 is beta and sluggish at times. I reverted to Firefox-2 easily enough.

2) Pulseaudio server is still a bit immature. One of my boxes had two sound cards and it took a long while to sort out. Another box I had to switch the sound preferences to alsa.

3) On my laptop (thinkpad T60), the system runs hotter apparently because there is a kernel or bios bug for dual processors. This is very annoying.

All systems upgraded without any problems like misconfigured video so that was good.

There seem to be a lot of bugfixes going into the proposed repository at present so things might be less irritating in a month or so...

I upgraded from gutsy to hardy and so far it seems pretty stable. I've had a few problems with what appears to be nautilus freezing and a couple of hard lock ups but I'm sure it will be worked out. I did have to reinstall my nvidia driver but it went pretty smoothly.

I must say that I do not care for the "awesome bar" in Firefox 3. I think it is way to cluttered and as of right now it can't be disabled without doing a couple things in about:config. Clear private data no longer seems to actually clear everything. I prefer the URL bar in Firefox 2. I do not like how FF3 includes my bookmarks and so much useless info in the URL drop down menu. FF2 was left intact during the upgrade so I have found myself using it more than 3.

With Gutsy I had no issues with audio, I upgraded and the only thing I can't get working is sound, ALSA issue I think as well. The card is recognized and even have all the volume controls just no volume is heard.

I haven't had any problems running it on my T40 Thinkpad. I had Compiz running on Ubuntu, but haven't gotten around to putting it on Kubuntu.

The only problem that I am running into is the shutdown problem that some people are reporting. At first it was believed to be the ATI drivers, but people are reporting it with Nvidia too. It is a pain, but as long as it doesn't corrupt files the way that it shuts down, ok.

I think I'm going to revert at least Firefox to version 2. I find it weird they would push a beta browser on a LTS system.

I know it runs more or less like FF2, but all of my extensions are now disabled. So no go for me :/

I also noticed that the new nvidia driver causes weird graphical bugs when I playu city of heroes through cedega...

This was my smoothest Ubuntu upgrade yet -- which isn't saying much -- but it wasn't bad. It seemed to work fine until the end, when it complained that it couldn't upgrade gcc-3.4-doc, of all worthless things. Then it wouldn't let me check for updates, saying that it couldn't find the hardy-backports repository. I resolved that by removing /etc/apt/sources.list.d -- no problems since then.

So far, I haven't noticed huge changes. The Gnome Terminal font looks different.

Firefox 3 is the big one. I like it, except for one thing: I used to take advantage of the fact that bookmarks were stored in a flat HTML file by loading that file into the browser -- much more convenient to use than the pull-down menu, when you have as many bookmarks as I have. Now, the bookmarks are apparently kept in a database, the flat file seems not to be updated anymore, and I haven't found a way to get back the old functionality. Maybe via an extension... maybe I'll have to write it...

All my extensions continued to work, but I had to reinstall Flash and Java. Which was just as well, because now they'll be updated by Ubuntu itself, unlike before.

I think FF 3 was the right way to go, when you consider that this version of the distro will be current well into the FF 3 era. If they'd loaded 2, they'd be stuck with it (per Ubuntu policy) until 8.10... even longer for the LTS users. And it seems stable for me.

The update process went smoothly for me (a first) then I tried to install the virtualization piece, virtualbox I believe it was called.

That put me into some odd login loop and corrupted my video setup and/or drivers. Got most of that fixed to find out my network config was hosed as well. Bit the bullet and did a fresh install.

Seems more stable and robust, but I imagine that may have more to do with the newer vers of gnome and the kernel. Haven't fully explored FF3.

Overall I think I'm better off with the update.

Did am upgrade on my laptop (test machine) when the beta came out. Upgraded my way to final with zero issues. Sound and wireless work fine. Had no issue with widescreen resolution either. This may have all been different had I done a fresh install.

Still on Gutsy on my desktop. I'm thinking of a fresh install here. I've built a Hardy server and am going to pull one HD from the desktop and move it to the server. Hardy server is running flawlessly. I'll be interested in how the fresh install of hardy on the desktop goes.

FF3 is fine for a Beta but I miss my extensions. The rendering engine is improved (at least on my box) and it seems faster.

I wasn't planning on moving to Hardy for a few months, mainly due to nvidia problems I had with a beta and the FF3 issue.

Butttt......I'm a sucker for installing a new os. It installed without issue, except I couldn't get my nvidia card to get any higher res than 1080x768 with the restricted drivers. Finally figured out that I just needed to install the Nvidia-x-server-settings app in the distros. (Prior to that discovery, I had tried envy and got stuck in 640x400 hell for awhile).

Anyway....I actually like it so far. On gutsy, with FF2, whenever I ran vmware, my system load would go beserk, so I'd just make sure it wasn't loaded when I ran vmware-server. With FF3, it's no longer an issue, for whatever reason. Zero sound problems, listening to Sirius radio as I type.

Worst "upgrade" I've ever experienced with Ubuntu. The hosts file was broken so 'sudo' stopped working, Samba is broken, my ATI graphics card doesn't work (again)... and until I resolve these issues who knows what else doesn't work. Honestly it is as if EVERY configuration file was replaced with a generic and/or empty version. I might expect that with a fresh install of a new OS, but not with an "upgrade".

Thumbs down from me.

It means it doesn't work...

The OP asked for the opinions of people who have changed to Hardy and I gave mine as well as a short list of things that (in my case) were working just fine prior to the upgrade but do not work afterwards.

Any other descriptives? Error messages? Symptoms? Warning sirens? Broken and doesn't work are a bit broad.

My apologies. Perhaps I misunderstood the topic of this thread, but I thought it was simply asking for first impressions regarding Ubuntu Hardy Heron. So that is what I provided along with some (yes broad) descriptions of why I formed such opinion.

I appreciate the eagerness with which it seems some want to assist with troubleshooting, that is a ++ to the Ubuntu and dslreports communities. However, I have not reached the point where I am stuck and when/if I do I'll start a thread just for that issue so we can stay on topic and keep things tidy.

That's right, I did - both good and bad, all feedback is welcome.

Fair enough, and appreciated. It's just that, especially with rational comments, people here are more than willing to help out. If you get it sorted out on your own, great, you might want to let us know how you managed it. If you need help, I'm sure someone here will try and lend a hand. Thanks for the input.
