 Primus

I'm thinking of switching to Primus and was wondering if members with them could give me a sense of how they are. I've read that they have terrible customer service but they also have their own DSLAM's in some areas.

Thanks!

I don't use them but »User reviews - Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. tells me all I need to know. That's a rating worse than Bell which is a real accomplishment.

Yeah, I know. I saw that but I was thinking there was a possibility that they got better. Was hoping that people that are on Primus now would chime in.

Thanks

Unless you're sure that a DSLAM is near to you don't bother. I broke out of a contract just because my sync was 1300/600 when a remote was just a few feet asway. You're almost guaranteed to sync at a lower rate.

Since you've made you decision based on the few responses, good luck with whoever you go with.
Personally, I don't call their customer service unless I have no choices.

Hi Laidback,

I'm leaning towards Primus right now. But still not 100% sure as of yet.

Just an FYI;

Their internet service is great, me and my spouse were happily using them for years, but we had a wonky setup in the house, and had two landlines. We were going to get rid of the landline the primus service was on and move it to the other landline we were keeping, the change over process was awful.

So I would say if you're competent with the internet and aren't going to be doing much that requires customer service, you would be fine.

I'm currently happy with Acanac.

Hey, I switched to the Primus bundle a few months ago. I have to admit their customer service is not very good, you're better off sending them support ticket (via their website), else you'll have to wait a long time. You also have to make sure that when sending a ticket you show that you know your stuff, else a "Primus agent" will call you and tell you to delete your IE's/Firefox' cache or reset your modem... I've had quite a hard time dealing with them.

However, I live close to one of the DSLAM and I get about 3.5Mbps down/700Kbps (No caps either) up which is pretty decent for the price i'm paying.

Before I switched to Primus, I was will Bell Sympatico and their customer service wasn't any better, maybe worse... We were their client for 6+ years and they gave us a higher price fee per month and restrictions when we had to renew our contract..

All in all, call Primus to check if you live close to one of their DSLAM!

That is probably the best advise for the op.

Like Laidback said, if you don't have to call their customer service, they are pretty good.

Check out this forum. I gave some of my speedtest and my experience with Primus.

»Primus DSL, uncapped and unthrottled?
»Primus Latency

I've been both with Rogers & Bell in the last 5 years and I can't say that their customer service is any better. Bell always had my bill wrong and promised to fix it next bill, over & over this happened. Rogers internet was never constant, sometimes slow sometimes fast. I couldn't deal with the inconsistency. Now this was probably because I was in a overpopulated area in Ottawa, but none the less, it what Rogers was offering as a Service to us.

All in all, I had issues when first signed up with Primus, but once those things were fixed, I've had no complaints. I lost service 1 day and called up to complain and they gave me a credit to my account, which I received the very next month! For the price, I'm willing to accept lower quality customer service agents.

Hope this helps.

I'm with Magma/Primus and have noticed that my up and download speeds have dropped by close to 60% in the last few weeks. I'm in a rural area and am the last house on my road that can actually get DSL.
This is what I get at 8:00am on a Sunday morning.

The service has gone down the tubes since Magma was purchased by Primus.

Their customer service sucks. They do not return phone calls with any regularity.

I have my residential account with them and at work we have them providing hosting services for our website. On this front they are a little better than residential but we're still planning to make a switch as they're not cost-effective.

Since I'm in Ottawa and there's no Primus DSLAM near me that would offer uncapped bandwidth I'm sticking with Primus until I can find a better and faster alternative.

Why would anyone go back to Bell? Go with an indy ISP like TekSavvy, Acanac, etc. You'll be glad you did.

I was going to go with Primus but they finally fixed my line with the help of complaining alot and Teksavvy tech support. They are definitely above average when it comes to service. Took awhile for my line to be upto par but it was worth the wait.
