[speed/latency] Upload always 100%, DL not even close.

So I got DSL 3360/864 in my apt.

Cable never seemed to work right so I figure I give VZ a try.

Well I get wild fluctuations of my download speed, but upload is always rock solid. I figure and ask what the general consensus here is before calling VZ back out.

It is on a DSL only phone line, I use VOIP.

Here are the stats:

Transceiver Revision: 7.2.3.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast

Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 864
Margin (dB) 20.0 15.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 29.5 16.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 12.9 11.9

Update here is a recent line quality test:

I also have already done a tweak test and check out fine.

How wild is "wild"? Different sites will download at different speeds.

Are you seeing significantly different download speeds for the same site or is each site (fairly) consistent if you do the same download from the same site--I'd try it by downloading from the same site multiple times but to different directories.

If the download speed is fairly consistent for the same download, then that's basically just the speed that's been "set" for the site--if not, then you may have a problem...

Hope that helps...

Terrie

Run another one and post a link to the results page if you could.

Recent test, why the retransmissions?

My guess is Verizon runs your connection through a Juniper router (on their end). The re-transmissions cause unstable speeds. One more thing you can do to verify it is to run a speed test from »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest. Run one to NY and another to LA (or SF or SEA). You will most likely see good speeds from the West Coast servers and bad ones to the NY server. If so, it is indeed a Juniper.

What you need to do to get around this is download DrTcp (from the Tools section here) and change your Recieve Window (RWIN) to 13068. Save, exit, and reboot. You should now see much better speeds to the NY server. You will lose about half the speed to the West Coast, but your connection will now be stable throughout as the re-transmissions should be gone.

Well here is another kicker, I lugged an old (circa 2002) Westell Wirespeed home from work and I get my rated dl speed no matter what. I seriously don't get it.

It obviously isn't a Verizon only problem because I would have had the same result.

So, when using the Wirespeed modem, your up/dn numbers are always good ?
If so it's a fair bet the other modem was a contributing factor, if there's a firmware update available, that might help out.

Is this the lastest firmware?

VER:4.04.03.00

That is what is on the Versalink.

Yes the Wirespeed works 100%, which 100%(or close) speed.

I believe that is the newest.
Hopefully that 327 is still under warranty then ...

I'm having the exact same problem, and as you describe, the west coast servers are much better than the east coast servers. I get like 200/612 to NY and 1200/612 to San Francisco. I'm also using a 327W with firmware VER:4.04.03.00, and my specs are almost identical to yours:

Transceiver Revision: 7.2.3.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast

Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 864
Margin (dB) 23.5 11.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 23.0 11.0
Transmit Power (dBm) 9.6 11.9

I wonder what's going on? Line quality test says everything is OK, although there does seem to be one router (cogent?) that's lossy on the east coast.

Post a link to your LQT results and run a TweakTest and provide those results as well.

Tried Verizon Direct. They couldn't help me because supposedly my line is a business line, but they did a line test:

I tested your line and it is fine. It reads as follows:
Relative Capacity [%]: 32 83
Noise Margin [dB]: 26.5 11.0
Transmit Signal Power [dBm]: 9.5 12.0
Attenuation [dB]: 23.0 10.0
Bit Rate [kb/s]: 3360 864

Here is the LQT:
»/linequality/nil/2387649

And the Tweak Test:
»/tweakr/block:···a=normal

Try the Westell 2200 modem. It helped my speed and disconnection problem alot with having the 2200 than the 6100.

I currently have a post up with my problems with the 6100 as it keeps disconnecting for the upload and it mainly kills speed when using IE6 & 7 mainly. I use Firefox 3 RC1 for all my web browsing and its really fast and reliable.

I guess the way your connection changed from Interleave to Fastpath, instead of it benefitting you, it actually backfired and as Verizon says "Once you make the change, you can't go back!"

Yeah, it's a Juniper. I'm getting sick of these things, lol. Not all that familiar with Macs, but at the least you need to change your RWIN to a much lower value. 13068 is a good starting point. As long as the modem is handling your PPPoE authentication (ie not using a dialer), you can also try to set your MTU to 1500.

I'm actually using the 327 as a bridge to a D-Link DIR-655 router. I can change the MTU to 1500 on the router.

I only have one Mac in the house (just use it for writing because it's a 12" portable). All the other machines are PCs. I'll see what I can dig up.

I read in the other thread about the Juniper and that if I change my RWIN it makes the connection "average" better?

What is a Juniper and what is the problem with them? Is there a FAQ on it somewhere?

Does Verizon trade out the modems or would I have to purchase it? They wanted to charge me for a newer one, but I told them I still had the 327 from when I was previously a customer.

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, changing the RWIN will make the connection more stable. Junipers are routers on Verizons end, and for some reason the don't do well with high RWIN's and low latencies. I don't know how or why it all works the way it does, just how to recognize it and work around it. At this time there isn't an FAQ on it, but if I ever get the time, maybe I'll write one up.

As to the modem, Verizon will charge you for a newer one, but I don't see any reason that you should need one. If you do decide to try something different though, just get one off of Ebay. They're a whole lot cheaper and Verizons warranty on theirs is only 90 days anyway.

Thanks Jodokast!

I'll try changing the RWIN and hopefully that will balance things out.
