| Regular DSL Disconnects (line data included)
Ok, so in the past two weeks, my DSL modem goes red linked, and the DSL light starts blinking red. I am unsure what causes this, but a way to make it reconnect it to go listen to the dial-tone of the phone that is connected to the same line filter that the DSL modem is hooked up to. If I do not do this, no amount of messing with the modem or reseting will work. I have also tried unplugging the phone from that line and only have the DSL modem connected, but I still get the blinking red light occasionally and I have to hook up the phone to the line and listen to the dial tone and hang up, for the modem to reconnect to the internet again.

I never had any problems with my modem until very recently and I am dumbfounded with what the problem could be. |

| When you say "same line filter that the DSL modem is hooked up to" I assume this is the filter with the two jacks on it.
It is possible that there is a poor connection at some wire in the path. The DC current from the phone serves as "sealing current" to restore the connection.
This bad connection is probably inside your house. Since only picking up the phone on the same jack as the modem cures the problem for a while, it seems that the problem would have to be on a section of wire not shared by the other phones involved. Maybe there are few connections in that path and you could just re-do each. While you could test by running a cable directly from modem to NID for a while, it seems unlikely the problem will happen during that test.
I would consider adding a home-run with new wire and a new "splitter" to separate the phone from the DSL-only wire near the NID. |

| reply to dgatewood I too am having the same problem. Recently, my old Westell modem started loosing lock and it would reconnect after 20 or 30 seconds or so. I figured it was the modem since i've had it for 5 years. I ordered the 2wire wireless gateway and the modem still loses lock and resets. Now it happens 2-3 times an hour.
I have called ATT support and even had a tech come here and check the line. He even changed out the card at the junction box up the street.
i am dumbfounded as well. |

| reply to dgatewood My family is also having a similar problem. We've got the Motorola 2210 modem and a Linksys WRT54G router. Our connection is regularly dropped. It just started recently, within the past two weeks or so. We upgraded the router last Christmas and Bellsouth/AT&T sent us a Motorola modem as a free upgrade to replace our Westell two or three months ago, but it's worked fine until now. We've got a dedicated phone line for the connection.
Nothing on our end caused this to happen, AFAIK.
The Motorola modem was pretty hot, so we assumed that it was a hardware failure. Bellsouth/AT&T sent us a replacement, but it also gets hot and we've got the same issue.
So far, we've been fixing it by unplugging the router and modem, then plugging them back in a few minutes later. |

| reply to dgatewood I have a friend that had a somewhat similar problem but not the exact same problem. After doing all the normal troubleshooting that I could think of I decided to disconnect a speaker phone from one of his filters and that corrected the problem. I don't know why the speaker phone did this but with it gone so was his problem. |

| reply to dgatewood If you can look at the "uptime" on the modem after this happens, you might see if it's just disconnecting, or powering down. I was having a similar problem with it disconnecting briefly, and coming right back up, and it ended up being the power transformer going bad. Changed that out, and it hasn't shut down in several months. |

| reply to dgatewood dgatewood: Have you found a solution to the problem? I am seeing almost exactly the same thing (except mine will reconnect when ANY phone in the house is used)
I can reboot the router, reset the modem, nothing helps until I pick up the phone to make a call. It was only happening about once a month, so I didn't bother with it... now it's at least once a day |
