ATM VC Congested

I'm having some problems tonight, my modem keeps loosing sync. In troubleshooting on my end, I noticed that in the alarm log on my Broadmax modem I have the following condition ...

Sun May 04 15:29:21 2008 : WARNING : ATM VC Congested : Interface - aal5-0, PortId=7, Vpi=0, Vci=35

Would this indicate the ATM virtual circuit at the CO is congested? Net has seemed slow tonight but I thought it was due to the resyncs.

I've attached the modem's alarm log and the sho dsl stats.

I have never seen that error before. If you are re-syncing my assumption is that what was causing the error. Are you still having a problem?

It was a little windy yesterday. I'll keep an eye on it and post back if the resyncs get out of control.

When this was happening yesterday, My line stats looked good to me. Maybe, a modem acting up?

Well, Yesterday was good but today it's dropped 15 times. Although, to be honest, I haven't noticed it at all. Most in the middle of the night.

Attached is the log and here is my current line stats from the modem. What do you think? Modem or gremlins?

I thought it was going to stay solid but today it's resyncing again and the logs show more 'ATM VC Congested' messages.

Not sure what to make of it as my line stats look good to me. Any suggestions? This is becoming a problem for me as my VPN keeps dropping when the line resyncs.

Here's all I got... and it was at the time SCE decided to give me a nice brown out. SCE is horrible around here... 2 power bumps this morning.... typically its 3 strikes and power outage.

Sorry about the bad power, That must be a huge headache. How many times (on average) a day do you have a resync?

Don't get me wrong, I understand this is residential DSL service and there is no SLA. I can handle a few bumps in the road but a few days ago it was really bad and the only thing I can chalk it up to was the wind. If I'm using the VPN, I'll get disconnected about every eight resyncs or so. To be totally honest, I don't usually notice the resyncs at all. It's only in checking the logs that I see them.

Also the 'ATM VC Congented' messages in the log have me a little perplexed.

Personally, I get a resync once every few days.
As long as I'm not doing anything, I have a good chance at keeping the SSH tunnel open. VPN (SSL VPN) typically holds out better, but its a throttled (corporate) connection, so I don't use it unless I have to.

I don't know what the logs mean in general... SMT session is my telnet session. SCE is doing work in the area (again), and we've experienced a few brownouts lately.

The line readings look good from here and the line seems pretty clear of errors. The only thing I see is an abnormal amount of Xmt Shaping drops on the line. Usually only see those when a customer is connected to a RT but my info says you are on a CO. These drops could somehow be causing the modem alarms but they wouldn't necessarily mean the line is actually loosing sync.

Have you confirmed loss of sync for sure? Is the DSL signal light on the modem going out when the drops occur?

I reset things on my end (Sorry if I kicked you off) to see if that helps at all. Let me know if it is still an issue and I will start a ticket for tier2 to do some line monitoring.

I personally don't have any issues... my line's been very stable since AT&T has rewired the area for Uverse (fixing water in the lines).
I typically only lose sync ~ 1/week or so, and its not like its down for a while... just a resync.
Line is typically stable for +100 hours before a sync reset, and I've reached almost 1000 hours some times.
Of course, AT&T claims I can only get 1500/384kbps here because I'm beyond 10,000'.

Thanks Zak. When I have noticed the loss the modem 'Line' LED is blinking. I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days and let you know if the problem still persists.

In checking the logs tonight, I show a few drops on the 14th, Nothing on the 15th and nothing on the 16th. By the modem logs, it doesn't show that you knocked me off but the VPN was disconnected today when I returned from work.

I've cleared the alarm log and here is my line stats from the modem. Funny that Remote Line Atten is now at 0.5db.

Thank you for checking into this.

Thanks, It's always nice to know what other user get as a reference. Personally I don't have a lot of experience with DSL other than my personal home connection.

My connection has been relatively stable from a user point of view. I rarely notice the resyncs except for the dropping of the VPN and can live with the occasional resync.

I think it's all weather related. The wind blows a little the line resyncs. Currently, with the warmer days, it's been solid.

Wind won't affect me here, as its all buried.
I have had issues in the past, all between the house and the cross connect next to the VRAD.
First year of DSL on AT&T 'express' was good.
Second year of DSL on DSL-Extreme pro was good (better ;) )
Third year was where the issues started... I ended up having intermittent noise on the line causing sync issues (would be clean, then CRC errors and loss of sync for ~ 30 minutes), however it would happen infrequently.
Later during the year, SCE's 16kV line melted all the wires on my block (yeah - I have a piece of melted wire as proof).
After they reinstalled all new wires, service was good again... for a while.
Next year, similar to prior issues started ... ~ 1pm daily, I'd lose sync for ~15 minutes.
AT&T downgraded me to 1984/512kbps as they stated I was too far from the CO. Lots of CRC errors still occurred during that time, but no sync drop.
Finally, AT&T's Uverse crew was in the area - few minor issues with their contractors cutting my line completely, but 'finally' there's little to no CRC errors. I.E. They had to fix the 'water in the lines' issue to have working Uverse. TV service is less tolerant than an ADSL Internet service.

I'm at +10,000' according to AT&T, and they will not sell anything but 1500/384kbps to me :p most likely because of the complaints I've given their techs in the past.

I had a bunch of bumps this morning (windy out) so I switched out from the Zyxel 642R to the D-Link

I still wonder why AT&T qualifies me for 1500/384kbps only :p
