| Antenna for USB Broadband Alltel Modem
I have search the net for antennas. Most of the ones I find the seller states the device does not have ther power to drive it. I would like a high dbm antenna but not place my modem in the weather outside.
The modem is a UB 150 and has an external adapter. I have no clue what I am doing any ideas? aybe a booster on the external antenna feed to drive the active horn on say a 24dbi mesh antenna. I would like the greatest distance I can get, obviously lol.
Any help would be appreciated. |

Must have very short coax cable. Must be large diameter low loss. Else you lose all the antenna benefit in coax losses.
Antenna's gain (benefit) is measured in dBi (or dBd). A 3dBi antenna doubles the signal strength. dB is a log scale.
"dBm" is a measure of power, like volt for electricity.

Antennas are passive devices. A higher gain antenna does not "Draw" more power from the radio. A higher gain antenna worksits magic by directingthe same amount of energy produced by the radio onto a smaller area.

| Thanks for all the replies. It was my understanding that antennas were passive as well. However since the USB "modem" transmits I thought there may be a minimum power output required for the antenna.
What am I trying to do?
I have a USB wireless broadband modem from alltel. It is a UB150. It has a Y USB connector to increase power to the device and does something for the RF. It does have an external anntena adapter, the end that attaches to the anntena appears to be a female F fitting, not really sure.
I need an anntena to increase my speed. My average speed as is, is about 700 Kb/s down and about 130 Kb/s up. If I get close to the tower, several hundred yards I can get speeds of 1800 Kb/s, even though they claim 2.5 Kb/s on a EVDO net.
I would like to increase my speed with an anntena. My father would like to utilize the same service as we cannot get any type of broadband. We are unable to recieve any useful signal there. So I need to get the highest gain I can get to test at his house as well.
I know this post was long, sorry. I hope I explained what I am trying to do enough. Any product suggestions or explanations would be appreciated.

You may want to look at Wilson Electronics. I have sold/used many of their products on phones dating back to Motorola v60s and v120s. I have sold them to people using StarTACs and MicroTACs (ironic name actually). I currently use a Sprint Novatel U720 broadband card and I have a magnetic antenna and pigtail for my card. I use it when I go back to my hometown as the Sprint coverage is spotty at best up there.
The only catch is Wilson has to support the device. If the antenna port is weak (as was common on some early LGs and Audiovox models) they flat out won't support it, even if the gear they have will work on it. If your card is not supported, they do make wireless booster kits for both home and vehicle installations that simulataneous users can enjoy. These kits are not cheap (~$500), but work wonders as not only do they passively capture the signal, the signal is run through a 3A booster. The performance is WONDERFUL and the reliability is second to none. The best part, if you have customer service problems, you won't get a script. Every time I have called, I have reached a tech that was well versed in how everything works and ties together.
In the interest of full disclosure - I have sold these antennas in the past as a third party reseller. I was not employed by Wilson Electronics in any way, shape, or form and am only suggesting them based on the results that my customers and myself have recognized.
Check them out. They don't have an online store as of yet, but they do have many resellers across the US (some which do offer online purchase) and often the equipment can be bought (brand new) via eBay.
