[General] Boy we got sold a bill of goods by AT&T

Remember all the warm and fuzzy talk how if AT&T was allowed to merge with Bellsouth the customers would see lower costs? Lets examine this:

1. AT&T announces it will soon cost $5 to talk to an agent
in billing. So if you want to cut back on service because
of the economy it will cost you $5.

2. In our bill 2 months ago we were told that our local
service line charge would increase.

3. In this months bill they announce that 4 individual
services including *73 will increase from its current
$1.25 to $2.00.

Looks like the old AT&T to me. Maybe it's time for a different administration to break this mess up again? Considering the cost of providing service is going down the only explanation for these increases is corporate greed.

Then switch to another company? There are other options besides AT&T. Quit whining. Look in the front of your local directory, it will give you a list of competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC). Why do some people, like you, always think that government regulation/control is the answer to everyone's problems? That's called socialism.

No, it is called "lying" to the people. AT&T lobbied for their merger with Bellsouth by promising lower costs and all they have appeared to do is raise them for the consumer.

As to #1, if you want to save the $5 go online and change service yourself.

For 2 & 3, it looks like the facts of life have got you again. Its called inflation. As years go by, things go up.

You are all being completely unfair. sbcat&t has lowered costs just as they lowered them in each area where they convinced people to let them assimilate the well-behaved companies.

Consider:

•They lowered costs by closing offices.
•They lowered costs by reducing staff.
•They lowered costs by moving more and more to inter-state rather than local oversight.
•They lowered costs with new job titles that pay more than broom pushers but less than you'd expect.
•They lowered costs by seeking single (statewide) franchise agreements for services.

They lowered lots of costs!!!!

Oh, wait a minute....you thought they would lower YOUR costs? Silly rabbit, tricks are for kids and at&t.

I would suspect that some of these increases are local and approved by your state PSC or equivalent. I moved to GA in Sept and started my POTS and DSL service, and I've not heard any mention of increases since. In fact, the prices are very competitive. My 6Mb Xtreme DSL package costs me $27.95 a month.

Maybe it also has to do with the area of the state you're in, and whether or not competition is a factor for ATT. I know it is here in the Atlanta area. If you have choices there in SC, then vote with your dollars and switch to another POTS, VoIP, DSL or cable provider.

I believe that's part of the problem. I used to live in Marietta and remember the choices. Here we have two choices for telephone. AT&T or Charter Cable. The Charter forum will describe how unreliable that service is. The entire point is we were sold a bill of goods how rates would decrease. As for the $1.25 charge being raised to $2 it was announced in my bill which arrived yesterday. Soon to be in a bill near you.

Great concept there NewLife. Just as soon as veterans disability checks go up to offset it might not hurt as bad.

I finally got ATT aka Bellsouth to work correctly. I switched from cable to DSL and i am satisfied. So nobody's perfect. I was whining last week because nothing on the DSL side was working like i wanted it to. But now it is, so i'm not whining. Expect everything to go up from here as the economy slows. I am very happy with Bellsouth(ATT Southeast)this week. Whatever they fixed....i hope it stays that way. But it blows communicom away on advertised speed. So stop whining.

Seriously, though. I don't remember a discussion about that at all. All I remember on that line is a cheaper DSL Lit, which they did release for $19 bucks or something.

You want to link what you're talking about or perhaps it is something you thought you remembered, but are mistaken?

its only $5.00 to make a payment with an agent, not to call in and make changes. good luck finding any company (mortgage, credit card, etc) that doesnt charge you to make a payment over the phone.

Yup in fact let my phone bill lapse to long by accident once a while back and lost Dial Tone.... but DSL still worked, so went on line, and paid the bill,

And at next billing computer update had service back (about an hour or less) PLUS NOT the $45 reconnect fee either I would have had if I had walked/driven to a few remaining payphones and called it in.
Yes you are paying the idiots they hire to talk to you and evenually get something done... why not just punch it in yourself for those things you can, and get it painlessly done and in minutes overwith, not an hour on hold plus frustration and the added cost.

PS cable and sat are the same way ordering PPV, do it via phoneline connected receiver/remote or online nothing, but voice call it in, $1-2 extra cost, plus again the 20 min extra on hold..
