| [Services] WIFI Hotspot
I just wanted say a little kudos to ATT WIFI.
I was in a small town in NC today.I got a call from the office and had to log into the system at work. I saw a McDs and decided to check out the wifi hotspot there.
I saw the Asst Manager there and asked about the service. She gave me a coupon code to get free access for an hour.
When I opened up my laptop I saw that ATT had an hotspot there. I logged in with my email address and password, and I was online.
I was amazed that ATT already had a hotspot at that McDs since it was in a very small town in a rural part of the state. Being able to get online where I was at saved alot of people alot of money and time. Thanks ATT -- everyone is born ignorant. some are born stupid, others achieve stupidity and the rest have stupidity thrust upon them. |

| The other side of the story.
I signed up for the Wi-Fi Premier service last week at $19.99 a month (the $9.99 deal is not available in Florida), because I was leaving on a business trip on Sunday. The hotel and convention center I was going to be at, both were listed as AT&T Premier sites.
Neither worked, and after 2 hours on the phone with tech support, it was obvious that wherever they used a roaming partner service was questionable. They also had no idea how I needed to sign on to a partner. After almost an hour with AT&T support, the just transferred me to tech support at their roaming partner- both times. After I was on hold for about 20 minutes- both times. I called back to AT&T and told them that I wanted to cancel, and would not pay the $20 early cancellation fee. The quickly agreed after looking at the notes on my account.
I love my DSL and Cell service, but Wi-Fi- no thanks. I'll just pay the $12.99 a day in the hotel and again in convention center. -- No good deed goes unpunished. |

| It's 1.5 meg and higher customers.
If I remember correctly, the Premium service allows roaming on AT&T partner networks and while using the complimentary service you are stuck with the AT&T network. In other words, if you can't find a working AT&T hotspot you are SOL, or pay to use whatever site you can find.
They have a "compare the packages" link on their website if you want to see the differences in their plans. -- Prop your feet up at Southeast Chat |

| reply to mikes60 It is clearly stated that the free Wi-Fi service you get with DSL service does not include Premier sites. The online directory indicates which sites are Premier. It looks like most McD's are regular AT&T hotspots and many Starbucks as well as they are converting from T-Mobile. |

Most airports, hotels and convention centers are Premium sites.
If your DSL account is in old BellSouth region it is $19.99 a month to access Premium sites- $9.99 a month for other AT&T regions.
I would agree that the free use on their own network is convenient and easy to use- especialy when it's free. Trying to use their Premier sites- which it seems are through roaming agreements- is a nightmare. I tried three different sites and they finally got one to work after about 45 minutes. The other two never did get to work after 2+ hours.
My advice: Use the free service, but don't waste any money on Premier -- No good deed goes unpunished. |
