1 edit | Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues said by bcastner :MCE is a supported base release. Can I ask what version of MCE? There are specific issues that need to be dealt with for MCE2002 (only) prior to the installation. Can I ask what appears when you click in Explorer: Help, About as to the Version of XP being reported? Could you check in Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and see if there is a listing for XP Service Pack 3? At the moment I am not horribly worried, but I would appreciate the answers to these questions as a basis for deciding where to dig deeper. Ok, when I click Help/About in Explorer, I get this:
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition. Version 5.1 There is no year on it. But when I go into the Help and Support Center, it says Microsoft Windows MCE 2004. Is there another way to find out? Because I thought I had 2005.
There is no mention of SP3. Probably because I had to do a system restore to a restore point of 8:00PM, which is before I installed SP3 at 11:05PM.
Thanks for your help | |

| Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues Duchess, the same thing just happened on my old WindowsXP Home system.
I was lazy trying to install a service pack without properly preparing. I used MS Update to install SP3.. when it finished I restarted the computer but it would not get back to the desktop - it kept restarting. I tried "Last known good configuration" and it blue-screened. Got it to start in safe mode and now still waiting for system restore to hopefully bring me back.
I'll try to figure out where I went wrong if restore works.. probably borked because I didn't disable Comodo firewall and Avira before installing SP3.

| Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues Sounds like exactly what happened to me. It went right to the "do you want to start in the last known configuration" thing. I chose safe mode and had to system restore to an earlier time to get it back to desktop.
I didn't disable AVG when installing. Wonder if that was the issue? Probably not.

1 edit | Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues Yeah I just sat down at this machine to see if anyone else had the same thing happen. Still waiting for restore to finish...
[edit] Ok system restore worked. I'm not anxious to tackle SP3 again tonight..
Three simple steps to to take when I am ready to try again:
1. Download the full SP3 installer rather than use Windows Update.
2. Close all open programs, disconnect from the network, and disable security software.
3. Unplug all non-essential devices (printer, external hard drives, camera).
Could add: And make sure to have a recent backup.

1 edit | Promise me you will not go into Safe Mode if it happens again, and that you will not use System Restore. The choice if this happens again is to start XP in Normal mode.
1. Please check in Add or Remove Programs to see if there is an entry for Service Pack 3.
If so, Uninstall it. If you have IE7 or IE8(beta) installed, use Add or Remove Programs and uninstall.
2. Download the stand-alone SP3 package. This is 315mb, and will not be quick to download: »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en
3. When the download completes, reboot, and begin tapping frequently the "F8" function key. When the boot option menu appears, select Safe Mode (without Networking). Use as the Logon Name "Administrator" (without the quotation marks). Double click your SP3 dowload to install Service Pack 3.
4. Remember that if you see the Boot Option again after a restart, please choose to enter Normal mode. When your Desktop finishes loading, reboot again.

Um, I posted above in my last post that I did that and there is no entry for SP3. I have IE7 installed. Why do I need to remove it before installing SP3? I want IE7 and don't plan on removing it.

Trying to narrow down the problem.. Just wondering if there is some connection to gdiplus.dll BSOD that occurred (and was supposed to be fixed) in beta versions of SP3.. I never installed any beta copy, but I do remember getting a "gdiplus" security update through HP Update software a few months (?) ago..
Google search "XP SP3 BSOD" (with quotation marks) and you will find more.
BTW I tried to install in safe mode using the steps bcastner posted above - no joy!
I have to go out now but I'll check back tonight.. good luck.

4 edits | Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues For those in a reboot loop, where only Safe Mode is possible:
This issue is for the same reason that it happened under XP Service Pack 2 -- your OEM installed a Service driver that should not be on an AMD processor based machine.
See: You receive a Stop 0x0000007E error message after you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer »support.microsoft.com/kb/888372
Workaround -- for Non-Intel processor based computers ONLY
1. Enter Safe Mode. 2. Click Start, click Run, and enter this single word into the command bar that opens: CMD 3. In the black box that opens, type (carefully):
sc config intelppm start= disabled (Note: there is a space after the "=" symbol) exit
Stop at this Point -- Reboot and try Normal mode. If that works, (and it very likely will), do nothing else further to remedy the issue. Be sure to try a reboot to Normal mode several times.
==========================================
If still no joy, or you see a Blue Screen of Death message when attempting Normal mode, you can try one more item:
Open Device Manager, click View on the menu, click Show Hidden Devices, click Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
Locate the entry for ftsata2 in the list. (Do not be concerned if it is not found, just go skip the rest of the step.) Click twice, click the Driver tab, and change the Startup type from Boot to Demand.
5. Open Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery - Settings, and uncheck Automatically restart. This is to give you a chance for a readable error display if other issues happen.
Reboot into Normal mode.
Report back your success or failure. In particular, if an error message appears when you try to enter Normal mode, write down every single piece of information shown, and post it back here for examination.
Best wishes, Bill Castner
* This issue is common for HP, and COMPAQ at the moment. The OEM images prepared at the factory and used to install XP contained the improper driver/service entry when used on AMD and not Intel-based processors machines.
There are likely other manufacturers where this issue also occured, at least for a period of time. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

1 edit | Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues So, in order to update, I have to do all of this mess? And, I didn't have this problem when I downloaded SP2. Had no problem whatsoever with that update. I don't know if I want to go through all of this. I think I may wait until there is another update that fixes this problem. This shouldn't be happening and I shouldn't have to go through all of this mess just to get their updates.
Sorry but I am just a little upset by all of this right now. Maybe I will try it later on, but it really does seem like quite a bit to go through and especially if you are not very computer literate. Alot of that looks like gibberish to me. And I know I will mess up my machine more than it already is.

| Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues It is not a Microsoft issue to fix. The problem is that for a period of time the OEM manufacturer of your computer used the identical installation image of XP on both Intel and AMD computers.
Microsoft will not fix this for you. If you need an easier way to do this repair, please advise. But quite honestly you need only type one short command sequence in a command session, and use Device Manager to check on the existence and startup state of a single driver. Total estimated time start to finish: two minutes.
If the repair is not made, you will not be able to install Service Pack 3. Since you used System Restore to revert your computer, you unfortunatly have to complete the SP3 installation. Your computer is, quite frankly, a mess. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues Doug45,
That is actually good news, as we are getting closer to having lift off.
First, check your work in Safe Mode. Click Start, click Run, and enter: regedit Navigate to the "Start" value of the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Services \Intelppm In the right panel, examine the value "Start" Change the 'Start' value to 4 instead of its setting of 1. To do this, right click on the value "Start" in the right panel and choose Modify.
If it does not read: 00000004 then edit it so that it does.
Now a question for you: what graphics adapter do you have, and if you remember, what is the name of the driver set you last installed for this adapter? You can check in Safe Mode with Device Manager to be certain. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

Your help got me over the problem while keeping frustration to a minimum.
By the way, the graphics adapter is integrated on the motherboard. It is ATI Radeon xpress 200, driver version 8.17.0.0, 8/13/2005. Although it probably doesn't matter anymore.
Thanks again. | |

1 edit | Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues dolphins,
You do not have to do anything at the moment, nor change any of the things you have done. There is no reason to re-partition for the problems you are having. The issue is not for you one of drive space.
Using the Run line from Start, Run is perfectly acceptable.
STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xBAAA8756, 0xBACC7430, 0xBACC721C) error is almost assuredly related to your graphics adapter.
What brand is it, and what was the name of the last driver set used to update it, if any? -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues The "fix" states:
• If you have an AMD processor, and you have the Service entry for "intelppm" set to 00000001, you have to change it to 00000004. You can use Regedit directly to do so; you can copy to Notepda the .REG script I wrote and run that; you can use Start, Run and enter the command line: sc config intelppm start= disabled
But you have to do one of them to avoid the constant reboot issue that can happen after installing SP3.
• If ftsata2 is not found, then ignore the rest of that section of the "fix" as it does not apply to you.
From what I can make of your earlier comments, you have the proper settings for "ftsata2" but the improper settings for "intelppm", and hence that needs to be changed.

1 edit | Should I Disable My Antivirus Before Installing SP3>
Not just your antivirus, but all anti-malware programs. One of the reasons I asked for the Full Download of SP3 and its instalation in Safe Mode was to ensure that these software programs could not conflict with the installation. One of the biggest causes of corrupt IE7 installations, for example, has been some third-party firewall products.
From Microsoft: Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 »support.microsoft.com/kb/950717/
quote: If you are running antivirus software Warning This workaround may make a computer or a network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.
Important
If the configuration of your antivirus software prevents certain system files from being changed, the Windows XP SP3 installation may fail. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus software. To do this, right-click your antivirus program icon, and then click Disable. This icon typically appears in the lower right corner of the computer screen.
If you disable your antivirus software before you install Windows XP SP3, make sure that you know the risks that are involved, and make sure that you enable the antivirus software after Windows XP SP3 is installed.

| I had the same exact experience with WindowsXP HOME. On the third pc I updated to SP3 (first two went fine). SP3 update downloads and installs then when you reboot it never fully makes it into windows. It gets stuck in a perpetual reboot unless you select safe mode.
Spent three hours with Microsoft chat support. He thought it was a hardware issue. I gave up and got some sleep.
Started over again today. Same result.

| I too have tried and successfully installed SP3 only for it to reboot into a crash loop. I tried going into safe mode and it crashED while on desktop back to the infamous SP3 crash loop. I have found that the "know it all" on here says it is because it installs a driver that conflicts with AMD proccessors, I happen to be an AMD user as it is the BEST processor available. I am currently and have been in the past successfully running windows xp SP2 with no problems. I will not update to SP3, I do NOT find it fair nor worth going into all the steps necessary to disable some driver that should have NEVER been installed just to have some more CRAP from Microsoft. If MS won't fix it themselves internally then I guess NO AMD user will be able to use this SP3 without going through this strenuous process, especially when most people aren't that educated in that field. UNFAIR and UNNECESSARY TO AMD USERS. Next time , IM GOING APPLE.

I am/was waiting to see how you did. Guess I will wait a bit more. I know there is a way to get this done, but I don't know if it is worth all this. I may just stick with SP2 for a bit longer

1 edit | What To Do if the "Fix" Does Not Fix Matters
Try rebooting into Normal mode at least ten times. Several have reported a different error would appear each time, until finally a clear boot was achieved. There were no issues afterwards.
The reason this happens is that during that critical first boot XP is massively reconfiguring itself. This is as intensive a process as the Operating System will make on itself. Anything that was a sleeping dog lieing on your machine as a potential issue can suddenly surface during this intensive reconfiguration exercise. Often the reconfiguration will work around it, given several tries to do so. There is also the likeliehood that the Stop Error seen at any reboot is different, as it is a new issue not seen as a predecessor issue had the floor and attention. XP can work itself out of this in many cases with multiple reboot attempts. Not always. But many times it will work the issue out itself.
1. Very important: Write down the full error message and error codes that are produced when you try to use Normal mode, and post them back here.
2. In Safe Mode, use Add or Remove Programs and Uninstall Service Pack 3. By doing a formal uninstall, you will finally reconcile matters with Service Pack 2.
If you do Step #1, then I promise to research your individual error code. Right now in three Forums I have help over 160 folks with the "Fix", and only seven have reported a problem.
There are several reasons why the 0x7E error code can be thrown after the "Fix". Which suggests two things: First, do not revert anything other than Service Pack 3. Do not undo the "Fix". Second, if you provide the details from Step #1 it is likely the issue can be resolved.
At the moment, graphics adapters and in some cases the driver set used is responsible for the 0x7E Stop Error after applying the "Fix". It is not related in any way to the "Fix", but to an older version of a file called gdi32.dll included in some driver releases. We can take care of that too, but I need to see the full text and full error code report from your attempt to use Normal mode. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users
