Re: [connectivity] Unplugging Verizon Router

Where do I turn off Encryption? I understand that Vista is quirky but what puzzles me is that it always works on the second (after unplugging) try.

If the GUI pages have the red and black background, there should be an Wireless Settings icon on the top nav menu
Access the wireless security section to shut off the encryption.
But first you may want to try changing the wireless broadcast channel from the default 6, to either 1 or 11. If you, or a near-by neighbor use any other wireless or cordless devices, it's possible they could be conflicting. Often changing the channel on one of the devices avoids the conflict.
If that doesn't help, you might want to check for a firmware update for that 327w. In the post "Verizon Westell 6100 4.4.2 Firmware" by Montananice, Corky supplied a link to the update pages at Verizon's site.

If you have one of the older Westell Gateways, I believe that you need to log into the modem's setup utility with the IP address of 192.168.1.1 . In there, you should see at the top if you go through the nav the wireless settings, click that, and enter in the username and password for the modem. After, change your wireless settings in there to not use anything like WEP, save, and let the router reboot if neede, then reconnect using the machine with the wireless with no encryption, and see if it still acts up.

If you have one of the newer Verizon branded Westell gateways, then there are some tutorials around this site to shut off the networking, as I'm not familiar with the Verizon branded ones.

Vista is known to be a bit flaky with WEP and WPA encryption with some cards, so this is why we should try turning off encryption on the router first to see if this resolves the issue.
