Re: Road Runner redirecting

Road Runner doesn't redirect 404 error pages, that isn't possible through DNS redirection which they are using.

A 404 error is given by a real server that responds to a real name. Like if you typed »www.google.com/inex.html instead of index.html, you would get a 404 error.

If you typed »www.google.cmo instead of .com, then you would get redirected in DNS because the name www.google.cmo does not exist in global DNS.

Just responding because I continually see people saying that their 404 pages are being redirected, and that is not true. DNS doesn't know anything about 404 pages, it only knows if a hostname exists or not.

The fact still remains my email program was being screwed up because RoadRunner was returning suggestions.

So, based on your response, what was actually happening, and how should I have phrased the issue to satisfy your accuracy-in-reporting requirements?

Well if you are using RR DNS servers I think it would be very easy for them to add an "IF NOT THEN" and redirect you to any page they wish.

This DNS redirect has been a hot issue for months.

You don't have to satisfy my requirements, I said no such thing. Don't be so defensive.

But again, a 404 error is not the same thing as a hostname not found. A 404 error is generated by a web server, and for a web server to give that error, it must exist. RR does not redirect 404 errors, I can type invalid pages all day long on real servers and get 404 errors using RR servers. If I type a server name that doesn't exist, I get a redirection to RR's ads.

Whatever strange email program you are using was obviously not getting 404 errors for things that were being redirected by RR. It just doesn't work like that.
