For those in a reboot loop, where only Safe Mode is possible:
This issue is for the same reason that it happened under XP Service Pack 2 -- your OEM installed a Service driver that should not be on an AMD processor based machine.
See: You receive a Stop 0x0000007E error message after you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer »support.microsoft.com/kb/888372
Workaround -- for Non-Intel processor based computers ONLY
1. Enter Safe Mode. 2. Click Start, click Run, and enter this single word into the command bar that opens: CMD 3. In the black box that opens, type (carefully):
sc config intelppm start= disabled (Note: there is a space after the "=" symbol) exit
Stop at this Point -- Reboot and try Normal mode. If that works, (and it very likely will), do nothing else further to remedy the issue. Be sure to try a reboot to Normal mode several times.
==========================================
If still no joy, or you see a Blue Screen of Death message when attempting Normal mode, you can try one more item:
Open Device Manager, click View on the menu, click Show Hidden Devices, click Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
Locate the entry for ftsata2 in the list. (Do not be concerned if it is not found, just go skip the rest of the step.) Click twice, click the Driver tab, and change the Startup type from Boot to Demand.
5. Open Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery - Settings, and uncheck Automatically restart. This is to give you a chance for a readable error display if other issues happen.
Reboot into Normal mode.
Report back your success or failure. In particular, if an error message appears when you try to enter Normal mode, write down every single piece of information shown, and post it back here for examination.
Best wishes, Bill Castner
* This issue is common for HP, and COMPAQ at the moment. The OEM images prepared at the factory and used to install XP contained the improper driver/service entry when used on AMD and not Intel-based processors machines.
There are likely other manufacturers where this issue also occured, at least for a period of time. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

1 edit | So, in order to update, I have to do all of this mess? And, I didn't have this problem when I downloaded SP2. Had no problem whatsoever with that update. I don't know if I want to go through all of this. I think I may wait until there is another update that fixes this problem. This shouldn't be happening and I shouldn't have to go through all of this mess just to get their updates.
Sorry but I am just a little upset by all of this right now. Maybe I will try it later on, but it really does seem like quite a bit to go through and especially if you are not very computer literate. Alot of that looks like gibberish to me. And I know I will mess up my machine more than it already is. |

| It is not a Microsoft issue to fix. The problem is that for a period of time the OEM manufacturer of your computer used the identical installation image of XP on both Intel and AMD computers.
Microsoft will not fix this for you. If you need an easier way to do this repair, please advise. But quite honestly you need only type one short command sequence in a command session, and use Device Manager to check on the existence and startup state of a single driver. Total estimated time start to finish: two minutes.
If the repair is not made, you will not be able to install Service Pack 3. Since you used System Restore to revert your computer, you unfortunatly have to complete the SP3 installation. Your computer is, quite frankly, a mess. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| Like I said, I am sorry if you took this as a personal thing, but I really do not mean to be short with you. I am just frustrated and worried that I will mess my machine up even more than it already is. I don't have the money to buy a new computer if this one goes down. I will probably try this later when I am not so frustrated.
I really, really, REALLY do appreciate your help. I swear Thank you so much for sticking with me on this and working with me. I just need a few to get my nerves down. LOL... |

1 edit | Duchess44,
I did not take it personally. Nor felt you were trying to shoot the messenger. If you need a more automated approach to making the changes:
1. We fortunately installed earlier Recovery Console. Boot into Recovery Console. Use "Administrator" as the username.
At the command prompt that will appear on a fairly empty screen, type carefully:
disable ftsata2 exit
2. Boot into Safe Mode.
Using your mouse, left click once below where it says: "Copy to clipboard":
Open a new Notepad document. (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled. Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "RegistryFix.REG". Exit Notepad.
Double click your new file and agree to the registry merge when asked. You can then delete this new file.
Reboot to Normal mode. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| Doug45,
That is actually good news, as we are getting closer to having lift off.
First, check your work in Safe Mode. Click Start, click Run, and enter: regedit Navigate to the "Start" value of the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Services \Intelppm In the right panel, examine the value "Start" Change the 'Start' value to 4 instead of its setting of 1. To do this, right click on the value "Start" in the right panel and choose Modify.
If it does not read: 00000004 then edit it so that it does.
Now a question for you: what graphics adapter do you have, and if you remember, what is the name of the driver set you last installed for this adapter? You can check in Safe Mode with Device Manager to be certain. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to bcastner Since I did this before the edit I typed sc config intelppm start=disabled exit into the run command not knowing I needed to type CMD first.
I got the STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xBAAA8756, 0xBACC7430, 0xBACC721C) error)
Uninstalled SP3 to gain internet access.
Now I need to do it all over again?

Do I need to repartition in order to install this update? -- Prevent Malware |

1 edit | dolphins,
You do not have to do anything at the moment, nor change any of the things you have done. There is no reason to re-partition for the problems you are having. The issue is not for you one of drive space.
Using the Run line from Start, Run is perfectly acceptable.
STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xBAAA8756, 0xBACC7430, 0xBACC721C) error is almost assuredly related to your graphics adapter.
What brand is it, and what was the name of the last driver set used to update it, if any? -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to bcastner OMG bcastner, the registry change did it! I am so glad I came back to this forum. Microsoft support had me going down a different (probably wrong) and time consuming track.
Your help got me over the problem while keeping frustration to a minimum.
By the way, the graphics adapter is integrated on the motherboard. It is ATI Radeon xpress 200, driver version 8.17.0.0, 8/13/2005. Although it probably doesn't matter anymore.
Thanks again. |

| The "fix" states:
• If you have an AMD processor, and you have the Service entry for "intelppm" set to 00000001, you have to change it to 00000004. You can use Regedit directly to do so; you can copy to Notepda the .REG script I wrote and run that; you can use Start, Run and enter the command line: sc config intelppm start= disabled
But you have to do one of them to avoid the constant reboot issue that can happen after installing SP3.
• If ftsata2 is not found, then ignore the rest of that section of the "fix" as it does not apply to you.
From what I can make of your earlier comments, you have the proper settings for "ftsata2" but the improper settings for "intelppm", and hence that needs to be changed.
