What surface for Apple Mighty Mouse?

I've been running my Apple Mighty Mouse over white copy paper 20 bond but it does not give me good traction. Sometimes it skips and freezes. I don't want to use a tall rubber smelling thing. Maybe a thin one. What surfaces are good? How about manila folder? Like the MBA yellow envelope?

At work, I just use the desktop for mine. It's white textured plasticky stuff. At home, I have a glass desktop, on which optical mice don't work, so I use a mouse pad there.

Why not just the desk? Unless it's glass.

I've found optical mice works best on cloth surface mouse pads. If you want to save some money the cheapie round Ikea mouse pads will work fine. If you want something nicer, try the SteelSeries QcK line.

Why not get a laser mouse that you can use on any surface?

At my office, the pullout mouse surface of my keyboard tray works okay with my MM - it's gray laminate. At home, my husband uses his MM on the bare surface of his butcherblock desktop. We've both found that the cursor will suddenly skip off to another area of the screen from time to time, and that's probably not a function of the surface, though I suspect it has to do with lifting and moving the mouse at the same time.

Anything that has a rough surface will provide the best traction for optical style mouses.

Optical mice works best on a surface with a regular texture. Sudden changes in the surface could cause a jump, plus lifting and setting the mouse down could also cause it the cursor to jump. A decent laser mouse avoids most of these problems.

The problem with rough surfaces is that when they wear down they get glossy and the optical mice no longer tracks well (I used to use rough plastic mouse pads quite a while ago). Plus with a rough surface the mouse feet wears down quite a bit faster. Rough surface pads were designed to maximize tracking for ball mice which did require the traction of a rough surface.

I use (upon the recommendation of a kind soul here... ctgreybeard See Profile) an 8.5" round Wow!Pad. I really like it for my MM. I'd like to pass on that recommendation to you. I got mine at Staples.

Another vote for Wow!Pad. I use one and it's great. $2 at Office Max.

The mouse pad I bought is Japanese-made, so I could not find a picture or reference. I use a hard-surface mouse pad, similar to this:

My Logitech MX Revolution mouse works GREAT on it.

I bought a round black IKEA pad to use with my new Imac.
I never knew until I read this post that there was people were having a problem with the MM and the surface it was on.

Thus in an indirect way I am saying..... The IKEA pad is Great!

I haven't had a problem with the round Ikea mouse pads yet. I've used them for quite a few years since I had problems with my MouseMan Optical on nice hard surface mouse pads a few years back. In fact I'm using a round polka dot one with my Wireless MM (which is laser though) right now. I also use one with my G7 Gaming mouse, they all work great. Since it's a cloth top, it has a reasonably smooth glide (not as good as the SteelSeries Qck), and cuts down on the feet wear.

I use a round Apple mousepad I picked up at the Company Store in Cupertino. It's awesome.

Here is about the only image I can find of it on the web ...
