Hi, I was wondering if a crossover cable is needed to connect the phone ata to a dsl modem(wan of the ata to the modem)? As I am unable to get passed the ata to the internet with my computer. Also are ata's user configurable? My ata is provided by the provider, if that is any help.

| What make/model ATA do you have? Modem? Most ATAs (Linksys, D-Link, Motorola) do not require a crossover cable. If your ATA has an Internet or WAN light and it comes on, the connection to the modem is probably ok.
Most DSL service in US uses PPPoE. In some cases, this is handled by the modem, in others, it is set up on the PC. In the latter case, you would have to set it up on the ATA, entering the user name and password supplied by your ISP.
With the ATA out of the system and your Internet connection operating normally, go to a Command Prompt and type
ipconfig
If you see just an Ethernet interface and the IP address is a public IP (one that does not begin with 192.168, 10, or 172.16-31), then no special configuration should be needed.
If you have just the Ethernet, but the IP address is private, you may need to change the LAN IP address in the ATA, if there is a conflict.
If you see a PPP interface also (with a public IP), then you will need to set up PPPoE on the ATA.
All ATAs have a web interface to allow configuration by the user. Some providers restrict what can be modified, but the router parameters that we are discussing here should always be open. With the ATA connected between PC and modem, reboot the PC, then check ipconfig again. The Ethernet interface should now show a private IP; the value shown for Default Gateway is the LAN address of the ATA. You should be able to point your browser there and do any configuration needed. On a Linksys ATA, you can pick up the phone and dial **** then 210# to hear the LAN IP. |

| I have a KTA2110 chinese brand; what ever that means, I know its an unknown brand, but I was looking through the user manual and it has similar features. The problem I am having is that I can't get past the ata on my computer, has a local IP address, on to the internet. The wan light lights up and blinks occasionally, the way normal ethernet runs. I can't login to the ata, no matter what password I use(the ones in the manual or the account password and usernames respectively). I would like to put the ata in bridge mode so I can use my current router. I am going to have to ask the provider for the username and password as it seems not to be the default.
About the crossover cable, my dsl modem (westell 2100) had dhcp built in, but with out a router,(when I connect a computer directly to the modem, I can never get the comp on the internet with out a router. I think I still might need a crossover cuz the manual mentions something about it |

If the router you mentioned is configured with PPPoE for the WAN connection, then your DSL modem is not configured to dial the PPPoE connection automatically. Which means your ATA will have to be configured that way. I suggest you ask your VoIP provider how to do that. |

Hi,
If you don't mind my asking, I'm a bit curious. Why did you select the KTA2110 over say a PAP2, or PAP2T ATA? Was it significantly cheaper? Did it offer features you couldn't find in other devices?
I recently started to use VOIP, and when looking at the forum, it became clear that some devices were common and could be supported by this forum, others were not. I elected to put my $50 down on a PAP2T. I'd be interested in the purchase thoughts of someone who made a different decision.

In this case, please check your router configuration and see if it's configured with a PPPoE to register to your ISP. If so, then your aDSL modem has been configured in a transparent bridge mode (which is good) and any device that connects to your aDSL modem ought to be configured with a PPPoE connection.

As far as I know I don't use PPPoE, I don't have any settings in my router for it to login, I just connect it and it works. I know this is laymen terminology but it is just easier to explain it this way. Also I chose the particular ATA because it was free, I never have used voip and want to try it in the cheap. I don't know if my provider will allow me to have my own ATA.

New challenge, how do I setup the ata since I wiped it clean by doing a hard reset. I finally got it to work properly on my network, now it is just setting it up as the phone led will blink (indicating bad login info or something to that order) and I am unable to make calls yet. All most there. |

Most aDSL connection through a modem that I knew of using a PPPoE connection with a login and yours doesn't even do a login. I had tried an aDSL promotion back in 2002 through a fiber connection where the telco sent its technician to replace a little adapter connected to the demarc to split out an RJ45. I could just plug in my router or computer to the RJ45 port (no aDSL modem involved) and it went online right the way with a public IP Address assigned from the ISP.

In any case I assume they want your money (it's probably a pay monthly deal) so I doubt you'll get much trouble from them....
That said try pushing to get the SIP setup info rather than provisioning your ATA to get the info from their servers directly (since the second scenario would likely lock the ATA again) |

| I finally got everything working very, very well! I had to use their ftp servers to get the config on the ATA, but that is a small price to pay to get the service working correctly. It has locked the ATA's more advanced options, but those options they locked weren't necessary to adjust anyway. The password for the user is different than the default password they gave me, man I am helping them (allvoi) find some big bugs in their system, and they are supposed to be out of beta!
