| [Speed Problem] barely connected
Help me, please. Weve been having trouble with our DSL for the past 3 weeks now. I had hoped at first that there was just problems in the area and Earthlink would fix the issue themselves. But after 3 weeks of the same problem, and about a week trying to get through their costumer support for help, Im beginning to feel like their service pretty hopeless.
The issue:
Our internet has been dropping to a slow crawl at random hours of the day. The periods last from 30 minutes to an hour or 2. The issue often occurs around the late hours (though usually throughout the day, but from what Ive noticed through my use) between 8pm and 2am. The modem seems fine as all the lights indicate, and I do believe that I havent been cut off from my connection completely as browsers are on a load screen. However, after about 5 minutes of waiting, sometimes by chance a page loads, but most cases I get the message that the connection has failed.
Ive gone through the modem resets and have fiddled with the router; Most of the run arounds Earthlinks tech support (always) puts me through. I just dont know what the issue is.
Could there be line noise? Does that slow down connections this bad?
Because were under contract, were waiting until we can drop Earthlink all together, but until then it looks like were a bit stuck. My attempts with getting further help from their service reps have ended up in hang ups and the same run arounds.
Is there anything anyone can suggest? |

| Any new electronics in your house? How long is the phone line running to your modem? I suspect it's local interfence. A short in the telephone line or a bad filter could cause these problems. Can you connect the modem up and get some line stats when the problem is occuring? Is the connection fast and stable other than these times? |

| reply to JVLaset sorry took so long to reply to this. I've tried (god knows why) to work with Earthlink's technical support over the phone and through the live chat, only to be told that they're "certain" that their solution will fix the problem. it never does, and the solutions never change; power cyclcing, bridging the router, taking out the router and using just the modem, reseting the modem, etc.
The issue, i've come to find after 3 weeks, happenes every night between 8pm and 11pm. i can not understand how this can be an equipment problem, but i have no idea who to call for this... and how to get past tech support to be able to open a ticket.
(off topic, i've decided to write to the mercury news's action line in hopes that maybe they can publish the issue and provide me an answer that earthlink cant) |

| reply to JLaset said by JLaset : The issue, i've come to find after 3 weeks, happenes every night between 8pm and 11pm. That has all the trappings of power influence which is an inductive interference commonly found in areas of single phase distribution such as used in the residential environment. A sure way to tell if PI is the problem is if you see a decrease in the noise margin during the times the problem is effecting your service.
As for getting it cleared all I can say is good luck as few techs understand PI anymore nor less what to do to clear it once it is detected.
