[Services] U-Verse in Northwest Alabama

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before and if it has I appolgize I just thought it was interesting that AT&T plans to roll out U-Verse in Walker county, Alabama.

The Walker County Commission approved a franchise agreement with AT&T Monday that will pave the way for the telecommunications giant to introduce its U-verse Internet protocol (IP) offering, as competition for Charter Communications. The commission essentially gave Walker County Chairman Bruce Hamrick the authority to approve the agreement, contingent on county attorney Hank Wiley first reviewing the document. However, Hamrick said there was no way in general the commission could deny giving approval to a franchise agreement. He said it would come at no cost to the commission.

The service took about a year to reach Atlanta a year after the merger, although AT&T spokeswoman Terri Denard on Tuesday would not say when it would exactly be set up in Walker County due to competitive reasons.

The city of Jasper is one of 18 governments in Alabama who have approved franchise agreements. Hoover, Gardendale, Graysville, Mountain Brook, Tuscaloosa County, Albertville, Chilton County and Blount County are also among them.

Wonder why they did not fight for a state wide franchise like they did here in TN.

They're pushing for statewide franchises everywhere. I believe they are pursuing municipal franchises at the same time to get a head start in some markets and hedge their bets on the statewide franchises.

In a previous news article it was stated AT&T did have a statewide franchise for Alabama but for whatever reason was signing with Jasper and now apparently Walker County.

Of course, none of this means we'll see U-verse anytime soon, just that it's coming..... some day.

One of the U-verse issues that has long since held it back from being viewed as a killer programming service was the inability to serve up various DVR recordings around the home, and while AT&T has been promising that said feature was on the way for nearly a year, there's still nothing to show for it. You only need shuffle through a few pages of the U-talk forums to find a plethora of angered individuals, and while some are optimistic that WHDVR is imminent now that 2 HD / 2 SD is spreading across the land, others are understandably skeptical (and bitter, too). So, AT&T -- when can these loyal users expect WHDVR to really be implemented?
