ActionTec MI424-WR + MacBook Pro Wireless Issues!

I have a client that has FIOS in their condo. Their original ActionTech MI424 Rev D router died, so Verizon sent them a Rev A. The router replacement worked fine, it would actually connect to the internet and wireless was working great before I left.

However, the client states that it will lose wireless signal on the MacBook Pro. Once it has lost signal it will not connect to wireless at all. The Windows PC works just fine via wireless. Strange thing is that the router is few feet from where the Mac is located. Same thing happened with the original Rev D router.

Any ideas? Is there a known issue with Apple and ActionTec? Router has the latest firmware on it. It is in the middle of the room using WEP 128-bit. WPA does not work on the older PC, thus reason for choosing WEP. Is there a channel you guys recommend with least interference?

Thanks!

If one connection is solid, but the other drops out, it indicates interference at a marginal level. Other wireless devices like a telephone handset or base station could be the source. A microwave, too. As well as other wireless networks.

Location of the receiver in the transmitter's antenna pattern may be a factor. To test, move the Macbook to a different location.

As far as a different channel, you'd have to see what other networks are around you. Netstumbler on the PC may be useful for that. Choose a channel not being used by another to minimize interference.

What kind of Mac OS X you have? Leopard (OS X 10.5) has problems dropping the wireless connections, you may want to check that first and update to the latest which is 10.5.2.

I was not aware of this issue with older Mac OS X version. I will check when I go to the clients again tonight.

Thanks alot!

The OS X was already 10.5.2. I did a search and there seems to be tons of issues with MacBook Pro's and disconnections/slow speeds with it's airport card.

I did change the channel to a less popular one. But it looks like the Mac is the issue. The PC which is much in the corner of the room with weak signal never disconnects.
