| reply to OverBurn Re: AVG 8 Free Better Than 7.5 After Tweaking
After installing AVG 8.x, and running scan I have removed it due to the following issues: It flagged 17 files in my unzipped folder of "UBCD for WIN" (Ultimate boot CD for Windows) as malware, then proceeded to delete several of the files as well as move the rest to the virus vault, with no apparent way to tell AVG that I didn't want those files removed.
I should be given the final call as to which legitimate tools are malware and should be removed, not AVG.
So, it has been uninstalled and I've gone back to ver 7.x, where this is not an issue. |

Anyone encounter screen freezes since installing AVG8? This is on XP. Frustrating, losing data not saved! Any advice appreciated. AVG may not be the problem but I'm suspicious since the problem seems only to have occurred since I switched to AVG8. I see there's an AVG8.01 - will that be better, I wonder? |

| reply to Finger2208 I have it set to auto update every morning at the same time. Funny thing happened last night though. It looks like it updated at about 10:30 pm and was sucessful and now i just manually updated it and it worked again. Don't ask me what happened to get it working again because i haven't done anything to fix it but i'm not complaining. |

I haven't been able to update for about a week now and i don't now what to do. Also i don't have the fre version of AVG 8 but a registerd paid version. No, on my AVG8 Pro I'm using on this machine I've had no errors when updating at all. Are you trying to auto update it, or using the button in the app? |

| reply to OverBurn As promised I have an update on the install of AVG8 plus Firewall on my Inspiron laptop. After running around with Dell regarding the hard drive I finally purchased one outside of Dell and got it all freshly installed with XP SP3. BTW, I would love to choke the crap out of the "Dude, you should have got a Dell" guy....I now remember why I'm not a Dell fan! It was a complete pain messing with them.
In any event I got everything installed properly (drivers, etc.) without the Dell bloatware and running great. I proceeded to install AVG8 plus Firewall. At the end of the install I received a fatal error and the laptop rebooted. Upon reboot my wireless was bricked!! AVG8 had only partially installed, and I had no wireless access, and was unable to fix the issue. It had pancaked my wireless adapter, making it impossible to even connect to my router via wireless, much less run the thing.
I was able to fix the issue by going back to a prior restore point. Then installed AVG 7.5 plus Firewall and all is great. But just being honest here....I did have major issues with the AVG8 plus Firewall on install. I believe it was the firewall portion of the install that crapped.
So I have had 2 very different experiences with AVG8. On my custom tower all is well with AVG8 Pro, while the laptop choked on the AVG8 plus Firewall install. I can't really state how AVG8 ran on the laptop, as I was unable to get the laptop to the point of being able to actually run the thing with AVG8. Back to AVG 7.5 plus Firewall does fix my issue for now. |

| reply to major marco said by major marco :said by OverBurn :Good point, but I've used AVG for a long time and I don't mind doing a little tweaking. I'm a tweaker, whether it's a car or a PC, I have to tweak every setting or any part that's tweakable. Takes me weeks to get my PC setup the way I want it after a fresh install. I've used AVG for the past 9 yrs and am not in the slightest bit inclined to jump throught the hoops you've jumped through in order to get the app working to your satisfaction. The other guy got it right: It should work out of the box. And, I might add, I shouldn't have to be a freakin' coder in order to "tweak" it. AVG is dead to me now. Did you read the entire thread or just stop there? I've already stated, after further review, all that didn't fix the problems.
I've moved on to Avira. Still have to jump through a few hoops to get Avira working to my liking, as with most software these days.
Everyone has to choose what works best for them. Just passing along some info, hoping to safe other people some frustration. |

| reply to major marco I found after checking into the new d/l for free avg, if you do a custom install, you get to uncheck boxes for the safe search, email, and plugins. So, you don't really have to do any tweaking except to get rid of the nag and that is easy. |

| reply to OverBurn So I was about to sit down tonight and finally update from AVG 7.5 to 8,,,BUT then I see all the problems others seem to be having. I liked the tweaking ideas, but seriously I reckon I would only fail and stuff things up at this end : (
So,,, for those who have given up on AVG 8,,,,what are you planning to use? And is it free?
Help/knowledge would be appreciated. |

| reply to OverBurn Testing PC Tools AV and Avira on two rigs at the moment. Will leave AVG 7.5 on the third for now but if that nag screen comes on one more time and freezes my PC overnight then it's bye bye to the final AVG install. | reply to OverBurn No need to change the title. You tried to do something to fix what was wrong and to help others do the same. Nothing wrong with that. I also moved on to Avira and am quite pleased with it. Good Luck! -- VoicePulse 07/29/04 |

| reply to caliFRAGi said by caliFRAGi :Nothing wrong with your PC. If you google avgrsx you'll find many people have the same problem (me too). I'm very dissapointed. I've used AVG for years, recommend it to other people, but now it have that "100% CPU performance" problem Yep, I know it's not my PC, AVG8's problems are wide spread. I've moved on to Avira Free and it seems to work very well.
I wish I could change the title of this thread and add (I spoke to soon) but the edit function is gone. Good luck to everyone finding what works best for them. I would give AVG another chance if they would fix the numerous problems, I like the new interface. |
