| U.S. military to build botnet?
from »www.securityfocus.com/brief/737 "... A colonel in the U.S. Air Force argued in a recent opinion piece that the United States needs to build its own collection of computers able to digitally "carpet bomb" enemies with a denial-of-service attack. .."

| World war in cyberspace, complete with million dollar mouse clicks. "replacing their hard drives with a simple flash drives" Interesting, I wonder why they would replace hard drives with flash drives? Faster access times? -- Life is a long journey on a short bus. |

Not sure in the context what would be the advantage. Easier to deploy, replace, wipe....?

| reply to Cudni The US govt. dosent need a botnet, they got something much bigger. The majority of the DNS rootname server operators are US entities. Under the threat of terrorism, real or fabricated, its very possible that the US Military could therefore easily put pressure on these entities to hinder "the terrorists" or "rogue governments"... I think they could take out access to any country they want to, at any time if they choose to do so. { Thats just imho, not a fact..... } |

| reply to Cudni said by Cudni :...Not sure in the context what would be the advantage. Easier to deploy, replace, wipe....? Cudni Perhaps the idea would be to use and maintain a largely inert set of bots online as "placekeepers" with the overall botnet running and at the ready, but with the rapid ability to unplug that "inert" flash and immediately install the flash containing the war-time set of bots which would be the real deal. The war-time set could be kept locked away until needed, and there could be multiple war-time sets for customized application in specific scenarios upon higher command. Having special combat settings, IDs, etc is not an uncommon practice in the military arena.
In addition, updating and dissemination of the bots could be as easy as separately loading and distributing fresh flash keys... a process that would remain completely covert until the moment of activation online. That would allow any military computer anywhere to be covertly employed at any time in the botnet, merely by plugging in a flash. -- If God wanted us to work with electrons, He'd make them big enough to see... |

| reply to Cudni From DailyTech quote: How will the botnet be formed? Williamson suggests first repurposing old military computers. He goes on to suggest that the military should consider infecting civilian machines with trojans, making them potential zombies, should the need for the botnet's use arise.
What the ... ? Williamson should not expect me to enlist. |

| reply to Cudni I don't get it. Shriyash is right, they already control a number of the root servers. If they wanted to DDOS someone all they would have to do is resolve a whole bunch of URL's to the IP of anyone they wanted to shut down. They could scale the size of the attack by how many addresses they change. I don't understand why they would bother with a botnet. If they really wanted to crush someone, they could resolve all porn site addresses to the hapless fools that crossed them. |

| reply to Cudni anything is possible but why tinkering with dns servers when taking out infrastructure is easier. I guess the colonel's imaginary botnet would be used as part of subversive warfare one where, if the attacked party complains, one can claim criminal elements, patriotic hackers etc are to blame
