[hard drive] Apparent second harddisk / IDE issue

My PC configuration : Pentium dual core, Intel E2160 1.6 GHz on Intel D945GCNL, DDR2 1 GB, Seagate SATA 7200 RPM 160 GB, Sony CD-DVD combo, XP-pro SP2 fully patched, AVG free 7.5, AVG AS 7.5. Additionally, I put a second hard disk from an old Compaq PC - this is a Seagate Barracuda 40 GB 7200 RPM ultra-ATA/100 bought nearly three years ago.
System is just two months old, and was going smooth.

Yesterday, shutdown took a long time, and today boot was very long. The harddisk indicator is continually on. I am attaching a file containing the relevant rows from event viewer.

Shall be grateful for advice. Thanks,

What happens if you disconnect the 40gb drive? Is the computer back to normal?

Have you run any diagnostics on it like check disk?

All the log really tells you is that you have a HDD issue. Disconnect the HDD and ensure your PC operation returns to normal. If it does, then you will need to reconnect the drive (external USB cases/converters work well for this) and do some testing. Start with the Seagate diagnostic tools.

Thank you. Just one query ... the log also says the DVD-RW has also disappeared from the system. Since my problematic second harddisc is ATA (& not SATA), and the DVD-RW is also on IDE cable, and the log also mentions about IDE issues in various rows, is it possible it's a cable/connexion issue (and not the harddisc problem)?

During POST, do all the drives enumerate properly? If you're not sure, you can probably go into BIOS setup and find a page that tells you which drive is on which controller channel and whether it's set for master or slave. Since this just started, it has the earmarks of a drive conflict. If I had to pick one likely cause, it would be a master/slave/cable issue of some kind.

Anything is possible at this point. I missed the DVDRW issue. But I would still start by disconnecting the drive. Once everything is back to normal, then you can concentrate on properly setting up and using the new drive.

Thought of updating. Last weekend, I got a technician to poke inside the cabinet, and it seems my second drive (which thankfully contained only backups ... I am a bit paranoid about data, and have several versions) has crashed. He felt that the old IDE HD may have had a speed compatibility issue with the relatively new CPU/mobo.
The DVD-RW is recognised by the system now, and so far, event viewer log shows clean.

Fortunately, the HD is under warranty and I can get a replacement. Hope, they give me a SATA

Sounds implausible, but could be possible.

It's unlikely. You'll get as close a match as they can make, and it will be a refurbished drive, not a new one.

Wait a minute. If it's still under warranty, it's not *that* old. Anything still under warranty is going to be ATA100 and substantially as fast as any present ATA drive. This story still sounds bogus to me, as does the "expert" diagnosis as a "speed" problem. I still think it's a cabling and/or master/slave issue. Note that the OP didn't bother to answer my question whether the drives were enumerated properly at POST or in the BIOS system information page.

Thank you for your comments. Also, for being open to the "possibility" of a compatibility issue.

Thank you srr2 for your post. However, it's not fair to tag something as bogus, if it doesn't fall in line with one's assumption.

With my limited knowledge of hardware, I had still tried to understand the PC I bought. Intel's website (»www.intel.com/products/motherboa···ndex.htm) gives the following ...
Peripheral interfaces
* Four Serial ATA IDE interfaces
* One Parallel ATA IDE interface with UDMA 33, ATA-66/100/133 support

In my original post, I had clearly mentioned that my second HD was a Seagate Barracuda 40 GB 7200 RPM ultra-ATA/100 bought nearly three years ago. So, why do you now "conclude" : "Anything still under warranty is going to be ATA100"?

As of now, I am just happy that my PC (sans the second HD) is shooting like a horse, and event viewer log remains squeaky clean.

All IDE devices released in recent years is at least ATA100. He was simply saying that it wouldn't be an older 33/66 interface HDD and that the tech that mentioned the "speed compatibility issue" likely needs to find a new line of work.
