| SCSI 15k rpm ultra 320 drive to work in regular Sata config?
Hey folks, I should know the answer to this and I think I do. I have an HP 146GB Ultra 320 SCSI server drive...Is there any way to work that into my existing regular sata setup to run as my main OS drive? thinking of it to avoid buying WD velociraptors. Ignore this if it's just ridiculous question as It's late afternoon after a prime rib lunch so I'm tired and not thinking straight

| You need an SCSI controller card. Adaptec or LSI Logic are the main well-known brands. For a single drive config an U160 rated card will do. U320 card will be more expensive and not needed as a single drive does won't need the throughput capabilites of U320. |

You need a SCSI HA. Either LVD, U160, or U320 would do it, though for performance reasons, you probably want at least a U160. |

| thanks folks, u160 eh, so lightning speed is what I want...but if the U160 will suffice, essentially if this does work as it looks like it will, I want it faster than the raptors 10K throughput so to speak, for no other reason than heck it can be

Most low end SCSI controller (like $40.00) does not comes with cable.
If you are going to use the SCSI HD as OS drive, BIOS need to be set to boot from SCSI first, also have yo go into SCSI ROM BIOS to set which SCSI ID to boot from (which will be the same as the SCSI ID of the HD and it cannot be set as 7)).

If the purpose of your potential SCSI upgrade is to match the Velociraptor you may be in for a surprise. I believe your HP 146GB is a rebadged Maxtor 15k II which is on par with the current 150GB Raptor for desktop performance.
Keep in mind server hard-drive firmware is not tuned to single user access patterns so despite the hardware advantage: 15k spindle, lower rotational latency; the actual performance data doesn't follow. |

server drives are engineered for maximum simultaneous throughputs while desktop drives are designed for maximum speed for 1-2 throughputs.
i dont think that drive would be a huge performance increase for the added price of a decent SCSI card if you own a Raptor 74GB or higher, or the Hitachi Deskstar 750/1TB 32MB drives.
would be cool to run one, though, just not really ideal in a workstation since half the drive's benefits (advanced command queuing) are completely wasted.

| Honestly, it depends on how you use your computer. The fact of the matter is that most folks are fine with the cheap 7200RPM drives available.
On the other hand, I used to use a 15k drive and stepped down to a 10k drive for better thermal and acoustic characteristics. I can tell the difference every day. I also use to use a 10k drive for my secondary storage drive and moved over to 7200RPM due to price; every once in a while, I miss the snap.
For forty bucks on a used HBA, it's worth at least experimenting.
