RTs/DSLAMs
Hey everybody. Long time lurker.

I found out a month ago AT&T's upgrading near me (outside Ripley, TN) to provide DSL. Now, they are installing the equipment.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what services these RTs/DSLAMs provide? I'm not expecting Uverse.

I also am attaching a picture of the copper (fiber?) leading to the RTs. If it helps, they had a orange jacket and were on large spools.

Thanks!

can't tell for sure without seeing inside the cabinet, but it is most likely a fiber fed rt, with a dslam (up to 6 meg service). but it could be a series 5 catena ( up to 3 meg). there is no small cabinet beside it, so it most likely not a cmr 24... just depends on what kind of dslam is inside as to whether it could provide uverse.... the small cable you photographed may be fiber, but it could be a small copper cable, just can't tell from the photo.

The cabinet with the two lifting eyes will hold a vrad to the right of that is a power ped and to the left is a double sided b-box which is where the vrad is connected to the field pairs.

Trick question. Only 1 of those is an RT.

To tell if it is fiber or copper look at the pole and see if there is a tag around the cable at the pole . Fiber is usually tagged at poles copper is not. In Tennessee ATT is puttng a lot of fiber in for its future UVerse service due out at sometime later.

I was wondering why the cable was wrapped like that at the pole. I'll take a picture to confirm suspicions. Beats me why AT&T would deploy U-Verse out here in the semi-country, but I'm not going to complain.

Thank you guys very much. I'll keep spying on AT&T!

In order to get a statewide franchise law in Tennesse passed. ATT agreed get there service to a certain percentage of rural area presently not service for broadband.

I usually look for the specialized hard casing and snowshoes lashed to the telco cable.

It's easier to place a single RT than can handle a DSLAM with room for a VRAD than place two seperate RTs fwiw.

@comcast.net

All vrad cabinets placed in our area have been fiber fed. Nothing copper fed. If the fiber has not been spliced yet there would be no case or snowshoes. Or the fiber could be directly pulled into a handhole next to the equipment then no splice case would be seen. Another tell tell sign of fiber would be he innner duct.

Well its good to see more signs of buildouts in TN.. I'll keep my fingers crossed!! I was told that my RT was a fiber fed MUX .. Whatever the hell that is.
