Record programs from ABC.COM

The network ABC now allows one to watch most of its series shows free online (with commercials), starting the day after the show broadcasts. It's pretty cool.

However, since my Internet connection and computer are not so great, the streaming sometimes stutters. So, a couple times I tried to download (record)a show, to watch later. (Also enabling fast-forwarding through commercials.)

I've tried some of the apps that usually can do this, such as Replay A/V, Replay Media Catcher, etc. Although then the commercials were downloaded (as .flv files), the show was not!

Apparently ABC has gone out of their way to trick such programs, so they are unable to download the shows. I looked in my browser's cache as well, could not find the show. (They probably want to prevent people from fast-forwarding through the ads.)

I even tried a screen capture program. Didn't work, could not capture that video off the screen.

Has anyone found a way to record/download shows from abc.com?

No!

Tough to believe, isn't it?
They make an actual effort to protect their copyrighted material, while still allowing you to watch it.
The nerve of them.

Something like Camtasia Studio that captures what you're watching on screen would work.

But the world, (and the Internet) is not a free-for-all, where one may just help themselves to whatever they feel like helping themselves to at any particular time.
I hope that doesn't come as a surprise to you.

No but there's this thing called "fair use", of which making recordings for personal use is a part.

How is the OP's request to record the Internet version any different that my recording it via Media Center on my PC?

You're probably (technically) not allowed to do that, either.

I have no problem with fair use, and I record lots of stuff.

But where's the law that says ABC Corp., or any other media provider, is required to make it easy?
They don't have to post their shows on the Internet to begin with, for that matter.
And I certainly don't see them attempting to prevent anybody from watching the shows, which is the reason they're made available online in the first place-- to be watched, not downloaded.

I most certainly am Guessing that I'm not, doesn't make it so. If not, I'm sure Microsoft would not have built that functionality into MCE to begin with (along with dozens of other PC DVR/Tuner systems!). And then there are things like Tivo "Desktop", etc. You need to some further research before assuming "technically" it's not allowed.

None whatsoever None preventing the OP asking for assistance in making a personal recording off the Internet either

And exactly where is your legal cite that says because Microsoft builds recording functionality into an OS that it's then legal for you to download any copyrighted material of your choice without permission?

I used the word "probably". I'm not a copyright or MPAA or RIAA attorney, are you?

But I'd suspect that between the two downloading legalities, 'not legal' is more likely than 'legal'.

That's right. And I offered him/her some. You haven't.

I also commented on what appears to have become a common attitude-- that of, 'it exists, therefore it should be mine for free'.

Awww. Poor baby. ABC won't just let him help himself to their copyrighted material without any effort whatsoever on his part.
