[DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

I can't resolve a few hosts, including some I own.

Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

Same here can't get to 4 I own, nor to Go Daddy. One is my home business which I use all day long. Hope it come sback soon.

@comcast.net

Are you using the DHCP-assigned DNS servers from comcast or third party DNS servers? If you're using the DHCP ones, try using the servers provided by opendns.com.

that being said, i'm unable to reach anything across the atlantic. seems like there might be some kind of routing issue.

I just tried OpenDNS's, same issue. Most of my Godaddy domains are dead as well.

Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

I'm unable to reach godaddy.com.

The first sites I couldn't reach were:

www.dd-wrt.com
www.eve-online.com
www.eve-offline.net

Fr0zen, if you do a traceroute, do your requests die pretty far en-route to their destination? When I mtr godaddy.com, it dies on the last hop. Same with a few other sites too.

Everything seems ok here in Memphis, TN

Comcast is somewhat notorious for regional DNS outages. Perhaps changing to the ever popular 4.2.2.1 as a primary would alleviate your problems.

Tracert it vs the Comcast one ... it was actually closer to me than CC's

If it's a new domain, it could be a caching issue. On windows XP/Vista drop to command prompt as Admin and try a

c:\Documents and Users\ blah blah bla....>ipconfig /flushdns

That will empty your local DNS cache. If running Vista I trust you have your UAC enabled?

EDIT: yep. Me neither - GoDaddy is not found. If only I could justify paying more for what Comacast gives me. Chances are Level 3 is having another bought of sellers envy

iirc, the 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2 etc DNS servers offered by VZ are now closed.

They are not Verizon DNS servers. They are run by Level 3.

They are still accessible to me:
The fastest are my ISP servers (last pair).

@comcast.net

Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

GTE(I) = Verizon, but the 4.2.2.1/2/3/4 are on Level3's address space.

$ host 4.2.2.2
2.2.2.4.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net.

Registrant:
Verizon Trademark Services LLC (DOM-384172)
1320 North Court House Road
Arlington VA 22201
US

So they're on L3 address space, but the hostname and everything points to Verizon.

Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

The Verizon reference is because of history. Once upon a time there was BBN Planet, a nationwide ISP (nee Bolt, Beranek & Newman). They were acquired by GTE and renamed GTE Internetworking. During this time they implemented a new DNS infrastructure, and put the nameservers in the GTEI.NET domain.

GTE merged with baby bell NYNEX to form Verizon. As the Bell breakup consent decree was still in force, they had to divest the national ISP division, and it became the public company Genuity. Genuity was later acquired by Level(3).

However, Verizon kept ownership the GTEI.NET domain, perhaps because they continued to use it for their local ISP businesses (which they didn't have to divest). And Genuity/Level(3) never felt the need to change the names associated with 4.2.2.x. There was still a pretty tight relationship between Verizon and Genuity after the spin-off -- Genuity actually operated Verizon's DSL infrastructure (at least they did when I was still there, about 5 years ago).

GTE Internet, which was in 4.0.0.0/8, was spun off from GTE, the ILEC, when Verizon was formed in 2000. It became Genuity, and had no more to do with Verizon than spin-off ATTBI had to do with AT&T Corporation. As Comcast bought ATTBI, without buying AT&T Corporation, so Level 3 bought Genuity (former GTEI) without buying Verizon.

Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

You need to reboot everything first. Comcast is also notorious for timing out your lease and not giving one back to the same ip# in a timely fashion. Once you can log into your router, Clone your Computers MAC address and see if things tip right side up again.

If I clone my MAC addy will that do anyting negative. I work from home via a VPN connection my company set up and I don't want to clone the MAC Addy if it will screw that up or my wife's labtop that connects wirelessly. The re-boot didnt fix the issue but I can now get on the router.

Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

It's not a DNS issue, I don't think-- I don't use the comcast-assigned servers, and the OP changed his to another set and we both have trouble reaching at least one of the same sites. I'm able to resolve everything just fine, the route just fails.

Seems to be an issue on Comcast. Blocking godaddy owned IP addresses (this is from Ccmcast and Godaddy not just a guess)
Godaddy and comcast are working on it as we speak.

hehe - comcast blocking godaddy is pretty much the fastest way to go from the top of the heap to the bottom

And if my interactions with techs from both sides is any indication ... that is not the official position of either one

I would place blame squarely on Level 3 - they are always in the middle of things, no pun intended.

Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

It has nothing to do with comcast blocking anyone. The requests leave their (comcast's) network and reach third party transit before it dies.

Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

It's not only level3 that has failures though, pccwbtn, at&t, glbx are all having problems.

I'm wondering if maybe it's a BGP problem of some sort.

I can reach google, but they're not a good metric because they load balance their network so you usually get a different server each time you request google.com.

I can't reach any of the other sites mentioned in this thread-- rlslog.net, demonoid.com, yodasnews.com, etc. It's not purely "godaddy sites".

If that is GoDaddys offical line I'm dropping them as a Host and moving to Hostgator. It's bad enough they can't look at server logs to pin point a shared hosting issue because they have 2000 ip#'s per box but that is ridiculous.
