Re: [DNS] Anyone having any DNS issues?

Below is my chat conversation with Comcast Tech. Support on their site.

(Tue May 27 2008 17:14:46 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time))>

It is not being blocked on purpose, I don't have the details but I have been told by the department in charge that there was a mistake and it is being worked on as we chat

(Tue May 27 2008 17:15:07 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time))>
It was not meant to be blocked

(Tue May 27 2008 17:16:23 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time))>
We have not been given an estimated time of resolutin but the people in charge of fixing this are working as quickly as they can to do so

(Tue May 27 2008 17:16:24 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time))>
I apologize for any inconvenience this is causing you.

(Tue May 27 2008 17:17:06 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time))>
It's the first time I've seen it happen

(Tue May 27 2008 17:17:10 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time))>

GTE Internet, which was in 4.0.0.0/8, was spun off from GTE, the ILEC, when Verizon was formed in 2000. It became Genuity, and had no more to do with Verizon than spin-off ATTBI had to do with AT&T Corporation. As Comcast bought ATTBI, without buying AT&T Corporation, so Level 3 bought Genuity (former GTEI) without buying Verizon.

The Verizon reference is because of history. Once upon a time there was BBN Planet, a nationwide ISP (nee Bolt, Beranek & Newman). They were acquired by GTE and renamed GTE Internetworking. During this time they implemented a new DNS infrastructure, and put the nameservers in the GTEI.NET domain.

GTE merged with baby bell NYNEX to form Verizon. As the Bell breakup consent decree was still in force, they had to divest the national ISP division, and it became the public company Genuity. Genuity was later acquired by Level(3).

However, Verizon kept ownership the GTEI.NET domain, perhaps because they continued to use it for their local ISP businesses (which they didn't have to divest). And Genuity/Level(3) never felt the need to change the names associated with 4.2.2.x. There was still a pretty tight relationship between Verizon and Genuity after the spin-off -- Genuity actually operated Verizon's DSL infrastructure (at least they did when I was still there, about 5 years ago).

GTE(I) = Verizon, but the 4.2.2.1/2/3/4 are on Level3's address space.

$ host 4.2.2.2
2.2.2.4.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net.

Registrant:
Verizon Trademark Services LLC (DOM-384172)
1320 North Court House Road
Arlington VA 22201
US

So they're on L3 address space, but the hostname and everything points to Verizon.

Hey Charlie, if this is really you, you might want to consider posting your response on CC's own internal help forums as well.

Just wanted to clarify that this issue was not on the Comcast network, but on a vendor’s server on the Internet. We worked with the vendor to correct the problem as quickly as possible and it has now been resolved.

said by m0unds See Profile :

iirc, the 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2 etc DNS servers offered by VZ are now closed.
They are not Verizon DNS servers. They are run by Level 3.

They are still accessible to me:
The fastest are my ISP servers (last pair).

I had the same problem, so I power cycled my Cable modem and it cleared it. Or maybe it cleared itself at the same moment.
