Whats With The World Of Warcraft Lag?

Now, I heard that the lag spikes in world of warcraft is caused by the optimum online servers or AT&T. All day this sunday I've had nothing but discconnects and skippy lag, where players just jump all over the place. My friends aren't getting any of the lag spikes and disconnects that I get, I talk to them all the time about it.

What is with wow and optimum online, and is there a work around to help smooth this connection issue out?

What exactly is the problem concerning optimum online and AT&T?

Hello all,

Optimum Online is trying to collect example trace routes so that our engineers can work on this problem. If you are experiencing WOW latency/disconnects, please post your account information (mac address/acct #) and a full trace route, including source and destination, in the private OOL forum.

Thanks very much. The more information we can obtain, the faster a solution can be implemented.

I been having this problem for about 3 months already; whenever I start to raid BlackTemple or Sunwell. My latency starts from 200ms to 20k ms then i just DC and lose all internet connection with my phone too which is VoIP. I first though it was my addon/UI or my computer; well I deleted all my addons/ WTF folder and that didn't work; so i reinstalled Wow and that didn't work. Then I though it could be my computer; so I rebuilded it again and that didn't work. At that point I call my ISP and told them my problem, I have had 6 Optimum Online techs come different times to my house and they couldn't find the problem with my internet. Until one of the higher level tech referred my problem to the engineers. They came 4 different times over to fix the problem; but I yet to see any improvements. After reading some of the other Wow players DC's problems on the forums, it looks like WoW doesn't like Motorola SBV5120, so every time I login I lose all internet and phone connection because of Wow. I already told my ISP about the game and what I found out about Motorola SBV5120 not liking WoW; said they are going to look in to it and contact blizz. This is just getting out of hand, blizz and Optimum Online needs together and fix this problem. Theirs alot of players with this problem, not only with type of modem but with DC'ing since the last few patchs.

ISP - Optimum Online/Cablevision
DSL/Cable Modem (and firmware if available) -Motorola SBV5120-2.10.1.7-SCM04-SHSF
Router (and firmware if available) - Dlink DGL-4100, but I don't use it since the dc'ing started
Any other intermediate network devices (hubs, switches, Power over Ethernet, etc) - No
Connection type - wired
Operating System -XP

As i'm not a OOL customer, i do experience this lag as well. I've called ATT - sent a message to the ATT direct forum here, spoken with Level 3 who is a peering partner of both ATT and TimeWarner. The response?

Blizzard didnt buy enough bandwidth, so the increased latency is due from their server(s). If you can get someone to run a reverse tracert - you'll see the issues.

that link shows the realm list by data centers. LA is impossible, but Seattle is fine. Midwest is horrible, but boston is near pefect. try connecting to another realm and see if you lag as bad.

Whomever you spoke to at AT&T who told you that Blizzard didnt buy enough bandwidth was obviously making up excuses to get rid of you. It's easy for everyone to point the finger somewhere else. I have a backup Covad DSL connection that has absolutely no lag problems. If you check the Blizzard tech support forums, you will see that there is definitely a problem with OOL.

i dont believe them at all either, but do a return tracert from the questionable server at hand - and you'll see the latency from them to you. for myself, my latency is 100ms-125ms which is normal for west coast transit. now coming back to me, the latency starts at the server with 300-400ms.

I'm also having problems with this on and off the past few weeks. At this point I wonder if it would be faster to get a new ISP (if one is even available in my area besides OOL that offers high speed) so I can finish the last couple of Sunwell bosses without having to worry about this issue. It's basically ruining raiding for me to know that at any time this could decide to happen.

try playing on another server not on the west coast, try playing on a east coast one, and see if you have the same increased latency issues. there is a link a few posts up on the data center locations.

I went to dentarg, and my ping is sub 30ms which is better than having 300ms+ hitting the west coast.

What you are saying makes no sense. If the server itself were lagging, then everyone on the server would be complaining about it. Maybe Road Runner is having a similar issue, but that doesn't prove that Blizzard didn't buy enough bandwidth. Once again, I'll say I have a Covad DSL line without this issue.

I've read that certain modems (Motorola's, I think) can cause unusual connection issues.

Anyhow, I had a Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 back when I played WoW, and I had regular latency issues. Tests on a T1 on the same server (different computer too) yielded similar pings. Blizzard has some spotty performance.

I like watching her disconnect and getting conflag instantly blowing us all up. I blame her alone for us wiping on twins.

so yeah, anyone in the tristate area (more specifically Connecticut) know of an ISP NOT having these issues with WoW? I'm about ready to switch, it's been like a month with no fix and Blizzard won't help me, and OOL doesn't seem to be able to fix this in any decent time.

I wish FiOS was in my area or I'd be long gone. It has been a longtime since I've been able to do BT with out my 10 - 20 second spikes. usually ending with a D/C. Service is getting poor.

I recently started getting intermittent lag spikes and an occasional disconnect over the last 2 weeks. I thought it was my router dying but i guess it's OOL failing us again.

Mob,hate to disagree but you're wrong about the boston datacenter! I am altar of storms in the boston center and my ping is unplayable, in the 800 to 1000 range when the spike happens. It has been that way for about 2 weeks now. I live less than 2 miles from the hicksville node for ool so it certainly isn't my early routing to the backbone causing the issue.
