Vonage TA's - multiple questions

I see Vonage is offering 2 different TA's - the V Portal and an recon Moto VT214RB. What is/are the merits of paying $10 more for a V Portal TA when a free option is available?

I don't want the routing functions, can I run either one behind my Netgear WPN824 router?

Is there a list of incompatible phones for either of these TA's?

I am working towards dropping AT&T Callvantage and moving my number to Vonage.

Frankly, I'd look for a linksys pap2. They work very well, are small and don't generate any heat either.

1 edit
My Vonage Linksys PAP2v2 occasionally had issues with sending caller ID data and the signal to my handsets for the voicemail message waiting indicator. The Vonage V-Portal adapter that I replaced it with works flawlessly.

I am new to Vonage and I have been using it for past couple of weeks with no problems. I am using V Portal and its a nice little box. I have it behind my Linksys router and its working just fine. My connection is as follows:

wall -> DSL modem -> Wireless Linksys -> V Portal

I set QoS to high on my Linksys for Port 1 where vonage is connected.

Good question...Hope this helps:
Ok here it goes...

The V-Portal (Vonage code name VDV21) is a very roubust device. For example, it has an LCD screen which writes out what error you have. Instead of looking at your blinking light sequence and trying to find out if it is blinking 2 time or 3 times or whatever, this writes out the errors in numeric values. For example (these are not exact but examples), a "006" code may indicate that the device cannot connect to Vonage. It will tell you if the Ethernet cord is unplugges and much much much more. This way if you have to call in for support, you simply call in and tell the Tech Support representative that your device is showing error "006" for example and they will know what the error is and how to fix it.

Also, to add, this device lets you do bandwidth tests right from the device so no computer is needed. Also, Vonage had developed a new system and they are the first to do it...they will have a very unique QoS method. They will be able to throttle and adjust upload and download bandwidth in order to avoid the bottleneck at your modem/ISP.

For example, going out of your Vonage device's Ethernet port all you get is 10/100. Without this new QoS when that traffic leaving or exiting your network goes out it goes out at 10/100 and then hits your cabke/dsl modem which is only at 0 to 10megs. This causes a bottleneck.

The new Vonage Qos will make it so that voice traffic entering or leaving your network is at the same speed eliminating the bottleneck, eliminationg collisions and packet loss, and leading to better audio quality.

I had the V portal device as a beta tester at the time I had a whole bunch of gripes with the unit, although I'm not sure what has been fixed, corrected or not.

I don't know if I would call the unit robust as mine died, stone cold dead near the very the end of the testing phase.

My biggest gripe with the unit was the backlight on the display never turned off causing the unit to run hot. I personally saw no need for the display as I leave my adapters in the basement in an equipment rack.
