Re: Traps

The only thing trapped for me is HBO and HBO 2. I actually Macgyvered open the box and removed it and had free HBO and HBO 2 for 2 or 3 years. Then someone came and put a new one on. I never watched very often though. So if I I would've gotten caught and had to pay that fine I certainly wouldn't have goten my money's worth.

Could someone explain this whole trapping thing to me? Why can't HBO and HBO2 be scrambled (or whatever you call it nowadays) like other channels you're not supposed to get? Why do they have to block channels at your house instead of at the headend.

Another thing. My system doesn't officially have HBO 2 on the analog tier, but its on channel 98 (at least it was up until they put a new filter on a year ago or so). HBO is 99. But HBO is also on channel 24. Whats that about?

Is it a bad idea to confess cable theft here? Will Comcast track me down and come after me?

I think some very old HBO contracts in a few systems required that HBO be trapped, so that every TV in a house can receive it without a box. Most of those contracts are expired and no longer valid. Thankfully, because removing analog trapped HBO allows for 12 SD channels or up to 3 HD channels in that same space.
