the first thing i would try is go to hotmail.com website and log-in there and see if you can check it this way.i would also make sure if i was using msn software to check the e-mail check to see if messenger is installed.i ran into this same problem when messenger got uninstalled.

what are the steps to check if messenger is installed,my wife gets into her hotmail but I can't get into the msn e-mail account w/ my e-mail address.thanks

should be an icon across the bar that says messenger(looks like two people)click on it and it should launch messenger.if it tries to install messenger i would cancel the install and get live messenger.microsoft updated messenger to live messenger.
not being able to check e-mail thru hotmail site makes me think it is a msn problem not verizon.
check and make sure something such as firewall or somthing is not blocking access.
i would also clear all cookies through internet options and try connecting thru hotmail to see if i could log-on and check mail
