I don't like the idea of an independent body with no oversight having arbitrary discretion on what constitutes a dangerous website. How do you propose a company verify child pornography without viewing it (ie, illegally possessing content on an office computer) without partnership with/permission from a government or a government-approved entity?
I've re-read some of the longer articles, and most of the stuff is actually saying TWC will take down sites hosted on their own network that provide kiddie porn. If the person hosting that site isn't actually providing kiddie porn, just young-looking models with signed consent forms and all the paperwork to back it up, I don't think his site would stay down - or on NCMEC's site - for long, and if it did, there's a fairly juicy libel suit there. |

No a T1 does not provide Newsgroups. But they don't lie to you either.
Time Warner's newsgroups were always crap. I'm more irritated about the fact that they seem to take me for a fool and that I'm supposed to believe the reasons they give for discontinuing them.
There is also the matter of the censorship. In the same paragraph, Time Warner stated that they both don't censor websites and will happily block access to websites on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children s list of "dangerous" websites. If you are going to lie, at least separate the lies out into different paragraphs.
I don't like the idea of an independent body with no oversight having arbitrary discretion on what constitutes a dangerous website.
And of course, there is the bandwidth tiering. Perhaps if Roadrunner would stop increasing the speed cap on the modems without upgrading their infrastructure first, they would not be having so many issues.
A dual-bonded T1 (Approx. 3mbps both ways) costs roughly $600 a month in my area. But it's worth every penny. No censorship. No bandwidth tiers. 24/7/365 service and the data rate is guaranteed through an SLA (if your connection is running below the speed you are paying for, they will come out and fix it). Of course, you can also go the UNE route and then it's much cheaper.
I currently pay Time Warner roughly $250 a month (multiple digital cable boxes, digital phone, Roadrunner Turbo/Premium). It's looking like it's time to scrap all of that How do you afford $600 per month? You must be making lots of $$$. I wished I could do that too. Ugh, my Kaiser health insurance bill (have other bills too) is like $400 per month (the joys of having multiple disabilities). |

And this is why I'm getting a bonded T1.
It may be slower and it may be more expensive but it's not run by a bunch of Orwellian fascists that dictate what I can and cannot do with the internet connection that I PAID FOR. umm, do you get free newsgroup access with a bonded T1? Or do you still have to use your own?
If its the latter, how are the orwellian fascists dictating what you can and cant do with your connection? They are not blocking anything, just no longer going to provide there users with free newsgroup access. |

Evidently RR is not forcing you to do anything Mele20.
People that say they are forced to do something when they are not are only looking to rant and actually weaken their cause IMO.
You do not have to like it but businesses are in it for the money and if they have an area that is under performing as in this case they are under no obligation to throw money at it for a small percentage of users. I do not agree with that but that is how it is.
quote: If RR is going to kill a basic part of what an ISP offers then it needs to give me a price break. It has GREATLY DIMINISHED what I get for the money I pay.
You should take that up with RR but I think the answer is going to be no and I do not blame them because the WWW is not greatly diminished. You can still get online to spread your special brand love.
RR is a company and if you do not agree with how they run things then go somewhere else with your money. This is not rocket science Mele20 and I do not know how many members over the years have told you this.

by "Search" do you mean stare at a blank wall then run your mouth about how you could not find any? in about 30 seconds i found this: »www.disenter.com/index.php?sort=···der=DESC
Further searching found (in about 1 min): »freenews.maxbaud.net/ »www.livinginternet.com/u/ua_pub.htm »forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/577787 »www.google.com/Top/Computers/Use···Servers/
Most of them are actually lists of many many free newsgroup sources.
If you don't like it that TWC is dropping newsgroups, quit TWC and go to another provider. I'm serious, vote with your wallet! As i said before in this thread, idle threats mean nothing. |

| reply to hobgoblin said by hobgoblin :There are plenty of places to read text only groups. Hob No, there are not. I just did a search for free newsgroups servers. There are NONE. Oh, there are a few that are READ ONLY. I don't understand why those even exist. Who would want to read only? Of course you want to be able to post! And you want a server that has a large number of NGs and you want to be free. That doesn't exist.
Some sites are STILL, several years after this changed, stating that the outstanding, once free text only news server from news.individual.net is still free but it hasn't been for several years.
No one would subscribe to NGs and not be able to post! NGs generally have far more in depth, learned discussions so, of course, you want to post.
Your comment that RR should do something instead that appeals to more users makes no sense. As long as there are users that want NGs RR should continue to provide them. RR has tons of Flash crap. I can't even go to the RR main site because I do not have Flash Player and will never have it. I hate that thing. RR has always provided NG access and should continue to do so for those who want it ...just as they try to ram Flash Player down my throat because some want it. At least with NGs, they are not rammed down anyone's throat like Flash Player is by RR. If I have to not be able to even access RR website, I should at least be able to get something very basic that always been a part of the internet and ISP's have always offered it: NGs. The internet is not a TV and RR is not going to force me to use something as awful as Flash Player. If I wanted to watch movies, I would buy a TV...that is what a TV is for.
RR should do what a real ISP does: offer a connection to the internet at a specific speed for a specific price and NGs and nothing else. If RR is going to kill a basic part of what an ISP offers then it needs to give me a price break. It has GREATLY DIMINISHED what I get for the money I pay. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. Its very obvious as they have said that very few people are using them and it would be better to focus their resources on something that has greater appeal.
There are plenty of places to read text only groups.

You cannot use Google unless you are willing to give up your privacy. You are required to allow Google a cookie. Google has NEVER gotten a cookie from me and never will nor will Yahoo or most sites on the internet. Besides trying to read NG in Google is a horrible experience visually.
