| Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US From »www.engadgethd.com/2008/06/18/ve···out-us/:
With DOCSIS 3.0 (and the corresponding 50Mbps download speeds) being deploying in varying parts of America, Verizon understands what it's up against. Reportedly, the carrier is gearing up to push its 50Mbps FiOS internet -- which is currently only available in a few of its more favored states -- to its entire US footprint. Best of all, we're hearing that all 16 FiOS-enabled states could have access to the service as early as next week, and if you're anxious to sign up, just know that it'll run you $139.95 per month with an annual contract. Thankfully, Verizon is also planning to boost speeds in the basic and middle tiers as well, with the former going from 5Mbps to 10Mbps and the latter going from 15Mbps to 20Mbps. Yeah, we like where this is headed, but we've still got aways to go before we can even sniff Sigbritt Löthberg's connection.
From »uk.reuters.com/article/rbssTechM···0080618:
LAS VEGAS, June 18 (Reuters) - Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is set to offer faster speeds for FiOS Internet customers in response to the growing popularity of bandwidth-heavy activities such as video downloading and photo-sharing, according to a draft of an announcement due on Wednesday.
"The appetite for bandwidth shows no sign of slowing down," Verizon chief operating officer Denny Strigl said in prepared remarks for a speech at the NXTcomm telecommunications industry conference in Las Vegas.
The No. 2 U.S. phone company plans to boost download speeds to up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) from a previous 30 Mbps for premium FiOS subscribers, according to the draft.
That premium service was previously only offered in some states such as New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts but will now be offered throughout the 16 states where it has built the FiOS network.
Verizon will also boost the downloading speed of its mid-tier service to 20 Mbps from a previous 15, and that of its basic service to 10 Mbps from 5, it said. (Reporting by Ritsuko Ando; Editing by Ben Tan)

For my purposes, that's more than fast enough. 5 was pretty blah, but 10 would be fine to me. You'd think they'd pump 20 up to 25 or 30.

I am under contract and Verizon has said in the past that if I make any changes in service that my price will go up to the new price. I wonder if upgrading to 10/2 will cause my price to go up.

| Re: Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US I am in a sticky situation now. I don't have Verizon phone service (I have internet/TV) so everything is based off of an account number. Verizon lives and dies by having a phone number as an "account number". If you don't have phone service, Verizon requires payment via credit card. Also, you don't receive a billing statement.
I log into Verizon.net because it will show the internet portion of my bill. It has an account number on it so whenever I need to call Verizon, I can log in and get the account number for Verizon. They have changed the website so now it takes me to Verizon.com in order to see my bill. Verizon.com requires a phone number. I don't have phone service! I am not sure what I am going to do as I want the free upgrade announced by Verizon in this thread.

I think the online ordering/upgrade process just adds entries to a queue, and they are processed during normal business hours. It's like calling in, but the order is submitted automatically, but not processed automatically. | Re: Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US You're most likely right in how its handled. I wonder if Verizon realizes they could easily decrease workload among techs by employing real-time, computer generated upgrades for anything that doesn't require a truck roll or user intervention. Not only would their customers be happy, they would save money when new services become available that involve nothing more than a simple "switch". (Then again maybe speed upgrades are more complicated on FiOS. On cable its just a matter of telling your modem to download a different config)

I don't know what that means for the 15/15 tiers and 30/15 tiers. I guess we'll find out next week. I also don't know why the prices are lower here in Virginia. | $140 is too much money for that service. I'd rather get a dual-wan router and get additional service through another company. OOL Boost + VZ's 20mbit plan would get me 50 mbit total bandwidth for less money plus failover capabilities should a provider go down. Certainly there are some routing challenges in that setup, but would get me more bang for my buck.

I called up billing to inquire about it - first thing he tells me about is that all the speeds are being bumped up, so I'll get twice the download speed. But we raised your rate by $5/month (he tried to link the two although my speed hasn't actually changed, just my bill, haha). So I say if you raised my rate by $5/month why is the bill $10 higher? He gave some convoluted answer about a partial prior month plus and advance month blah blah blah...

| Re: Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US I still see what I posted before. While your link says "for the same price", it's obviously at a different price. Using this normal upgrade path is likely to produce results like SYNACK posted, ie: effective date some number of days out. That is not the equivalent of making the call to get the new speed for your existing tier, IMHO. | |

| I am 6-7 months into my 2-year contract with the $99 triple play that includes 5/2 internet. Because of new bill format, I have no idea of what my 5/2 internet is priced at.
I like the phrase "Now get DOUBLE the download speed for the same price", are they going to honor it?
