Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US

From »www.engadgethd.com/2008/06/18/ve···out-us/:

With DOCSIS 3.0 (and the corresponding 50Mbps download speeds) being deploying in varying parts of America, Verizon understands what it's up against. Reportedly, the carrier is gearing up to push its 50Mbps FiOS internet -- which is currently only available in a few of its more favored states -- to its entire US footprint. Best of all, we're hearing that all 16 FiOS-enabled states could have access to the service as early as next week, and if you're anxious to sign up, just know that it'll run you $139.95 per month with an annual contract. Thankfully, Verizon is also planning to boost speeds in the basic and middle tiers as well, with the former going from 5Mbps to 10Mbps and the latter going from 15Mbps to 20Mbps. Yeah, we like where this is headed, but we've still got aways to go before we can even sniff Sigbritt Löthberg's connection.

From »uk.reuters.com/article/rbssTechM···0080618:

LAS VEGAS, June 18 (Reuters) - Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is set to offer faster speeds for FiOS Internet customers in response to the growing popularity of bandwidth-heavy activities such as video downloading and photo-sharing, according to a draft of an announcement due on Wednesday.

"The appetite for bandwidth shows no sign of slowing down," Verizon chief operating officer Denny Strigl said in prepared remarks for a speech at the NXTcomm telecommunications industry conference in Las Vegas.

The No. 2 U.S. phone company plans to boost download speeds to up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) from a previous 30 Mbps for premium FiOS subscribers, according to the draft.

That premium service was previously only offered in some states such as New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts but will now be offered throughout the 16 states where it has built the FiOS network.

Verizon will also boost the downloading speed of its mid-tier service to 20 Mbps from a previous 15, and that of its basic service to 10 Mbps from 5, it said. (Reporting by Ritsuko Ando; Editing by Ben Tan)

Nice, if 5Mbps is going to go Bye bye and it's going to become 10Mbps for the same price, that's excellent! Now I just have to wait for them to lay the cable where I am.

I can tell you this much, when my 1 year contract is up, I'll sign up for 10Mbps instead of 20. For my purposes, that's more than fast enough. 5 was pretty blah, but 10 would be fine to me. You'd think they'd pump 20 up to 25 or 30.

I just called to resolve a billing issue and asked the CSR about 20/20 in my area in California. She didn't know about it but did some digging on her side. She said 20/20 "footprint" was scheduled to roll out for next week, but didn't find anything more specific than that.

That is an interesting question - the press release says that the 50/20 tier will replace the 30/15 tier where it exists, at the same price ($89.95). That is the tier I currently have - I wonder if we'll get automatically bumped?

I hope so. I have the 30/5 tier(which isn't offered here anymore) for $55 a month. I would love for that to get bumped to 50mbs. Although once my contract is up I would be willing to pay $90(current price for 30/15) for it but not $140.

I was wondering the same thing. Will my 30/15 (which is already $140 here in California) get bumped up automatically? The press release mentioned that existing customers can call about the new speeds so I'm guessing that we don't get bumped unless we call for the new speed.

Re: Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US

I am in Portland, Oregon, and have had 5/2 for many Months now. If I read the news right it seems to say that soon...within a Month?...I will be upgraded to 10/2. However, another way to read it is that it is for new customers only. Does anyone know? This could help with them cutting off most Newsgroups!

You will get the 10/2 but you have to call Verizon and ask for it in order to get it. You will not automatically be upgraded to it.

I am under contract and Verizon has said in the past that if I make any changes in service that my price will go up to the new price. I wonder if upgrading to 10/2 will cause my price to go up.

Wish I could use the online management stuff.. I had FIOS for 3 months, never received an account number and verizon.com requires account number to create an account, account number is on the bill that I cant view without an account number!

Proof that Verizon is the worst tech support and website out there, I'm not even going to waste my time calling.

Re: Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US

I am in a sticky situation now. I don't have Verizon phone service (I have internet/TV) so everything is based off of an account number. Verizon lives and dies by having a phone number as an "account number". If you don't have phone service, Verizon requires payment via credit card. Also, you don't receive a billing statement.

I log into Verizon.net because it will show the internet portion of my bill. It has an account number on it so whenever I need to call Verizon, I can log in and get the account number for Verizon. They have changed the website so now it takes me to Verizon.com in order to see my bill. Verizon.com requires a phone number. I don't have phone service! I am not sure what I am going to do as I want the free upgrade announced by Verizon in this thread.

I can't use the online account thing either for my business (internet-only) FiOS account.

It requires the account phone number, which is my residential FiOS phone number. So it says it can't register the account for a business service against a residential number

deblin,

It only took about two minutes to go from 15/2 to 15/15 although I upgraded by calling billing though. It would be fairly easy to make it near instant online as well but I guess Verizon chooses not to.

Well, in that case you spoke to someone, no? I think the online ordering/upgrade process just adds entries to a queue, and they are processed during normal business hours. It's like calling in, but the order is submitted automatically, but not processed automatically. Someone from verizon can correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt it's an automatic process from start to finish (though yes, that would be nice).

Re: Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US

You're most likely right in how its handled. I wonder if Verizon realizes they could easily decrease workload among techs by employing real-time, computer generated upgrades for anything that doesn't require a truck roll or user intervention. Not only would their customers be happy, they would save money when new services become available that involve nothing more than a simple "switch". (Then again maybe speed upgrades are more complicated on FiOS. On cable its just a matter of telling your modem to download a different config)

Your services records are scattered all over in Vz's computers. They wouldn't trust an auto-program to find them correctly and then modify them. You think we see some errors now.

Well, I upgraded online for the same price yesterday, and it gave me an "Order Effective Date: 07-02-2008" in the confirmation e-mail. It is hard to believe that this should take 10+ days since it is just a configuration change....

"..Verizon says they're also bumping the speeds of their lower and middle tiers across all markets. "Basic" tier users who received 5Mbps/2Mbps will now see 10Mbps/2Mbps. The mid-tier connection speed of 15Mbps/2Mbps offered in many States is being bumped to 20Mbps/5Mbps.."

I don't know what that means for the 15/15 tiers and 30/15 tiers. I guess we'll find out next week.
I also don't know why the prices are lower here in Virginia. My girlfriend, in Maryland, a few miles away can only get it for around $140. Of course i would be happy if she would just get the lowest tier. She keeps dragging her feet in placing the order for phone and INTERNET service from FiOS. I need her to hurry up so we can split the $100 referral fee.

The press release is pretty clear. "Verizon had already offered the 50/20 Mbps and 20/20 Mbps services in its FiOS markets in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. The company is now expanding those offerings to new Verizon FiOS customers in parts of California, Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington, replacing existing offerings of 30/15 Mbps and 15/15 Mbps services, respectively."

I also don't know why the prices are lower here in Virginia.
Competition is stiffer in areas that get these plans at a lower rate.

Verizon was fighting with NJ and had stopped expanding the deploy there at the time 30/15 was introduced. Thus instead of NY and NJ, Verizon trialled it in NY and VA.

I have a feeling if we are at 30/15 we can upgrade if we call and want to pay $140. If we don't call my guess is our plan will grandfather in but won't be offered anymore. I may just have my plan decreased.

Wow 50 Mbps. I'm completely jealous, we'd kill for 10 meg fiber out here, let alone completely uncapped and unthrottled broadband.

$140 is too much money for that service. I'd rather get a dual-wan router and get additional service through another company. OOL Boost + VZ's 20mbit plan would get me 50 mbit total bandwidth for less money plus failover capabilities should a provider go down. Certainly there are some routing challenges in that setup, but would get me more bang for my buck.

We did this for years (Comcast + Verizon DSL) and it was sweet. And really not all that hard to set up actually. Uploads generally went up the faster pipe and downloads on the other (on a per application/protocol basis).

Since then, we've moved to FiOS and have found 15/15 (soon to be 20/20) and don't really need anything else (but that's just us )

From what I understand, that is a totally separate issue, as the newsgroup issue is due to the NY AG. They have shown that you can use that speed for what you want (as long as it is legal of course)

I think the prices should be corresponding to the speed.

50 Mbps = $50

20 Mbps = $20

and till hell freezes over (which is when I'll get FIOS)

3 Mbps = $3

I'd be concerned that it would flow through the system more like a new order and possibly generate a rate increase if done online. Although we still aren't sure that it won't cause an increase even if done on the phone, it shouldn't, going by how they have been handled in the past.

I called up billing to inquire about it - first thing he tells me about is that all the speeds are being bumped up, so I'll get twice the download speed. But we raised your rate by $5/month (he tried to link the two although my speed hasn't actually changed, just my bill, haha). So I say if you raised my rate by $5/month why is the bill $10 higher? He gave some convoluted answer about a partial prior month plus and advance month blah blah blah...

They keep saying $89.95/month but the service still costs 94.95/mo in Queens to be specific. Why is that?

It's supposed to be $89.95 here since it will replace the current 30/15. I plan on upgrading my 30/5 to the 50/20, although I'm not looking forward to the $35 increase I will see. But my 12 month promotion will be up in 2.5 months anyway so I might as well change next week.

How does this differ from what you see under your account?

Note I don't have Verizon telephone service.

Re: Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US

KenAF,
I don't have 50/20 as an option under my account. The other options are the same as yours - 10/2, 20/5, 20/20.

I see the same thing. I'm waiting for someone to post a screenshot that has a link to upgrade at the existing contract price.

Hmmm, it looks like the upgrade is available but it's a few bucks more. Is this because I locked in a lower rate with my 2yr contract? This is for Pittsburgh, JohnA, so you should see this by now I would think.

I still see what I posted before. While your link says "for the same price", it's obviously at a different price. Using this normal upgrade path is likely to produce results like SYNACK posted, ie: effective date some number of days out. That is not the equivalent of making the call to get the new speed for your existing tier, IMHO.

I am 6-7 months into my 2-year contract with the $99 triple play that includes 5/2 internet. Because of new bill format, I have no idea of what my 5/2 internet is priced at.

I like the phrase "Now get DOUBLE the download speed for the same price", are they going to honor it?
