cannot find server....DNS error

Well I have had att yahoo dsl for a few years now. I have a laptop and a desktop computer. I have a 2Wire modem and the modem is plugged into my phone jack and also into my desktop computer..I do not use an ethernet cable, I am using the usb cord to connect to my computer. I cannot remember which computer I made the main one when I set things up..I am thinking for some reason it was the laptop because we were not sure we were going to set up the internet on the other one. That being said....once in a while when we would try to open IE on the desktop, it would come up CANNOT FIND SERVER...unplugging the modem usb cord from the back of the computer and plugging it back in, would take care of the problem. About a week ago, this happened and nothing I have tried has helped. I have tried System restore, talking to 2 att techs on the phone, I put in the start up software I recieved at the beginning...the installation one. It started reinstalling it and then it checked the connections and it says the computer is not connected to the modem....yet it is. I bought a new high speed USB cord in case that was the problem and that did not help either. I go into connections and it says it is disabled. I try to enable it and it either says enabled and it isn't or it just continues to say disabled. I am tired of talking to techs I cannot understand and who mumble and really don't know what they are talking about..sounds like they are just reading what they are telling you...anyway....during all this....

my laptop connects just fine. I have Windows XP on the desktop.
I have the 2 wire gateway modem..and all 3 lights are lit up green as they should be,

also..is there anyway to tell which computer was set up as the main one when I set up the dsl?

any suggestions would be great. I am about ready to cancel this dsl and go with someone else...just to get it working.

When I was talking to the technical support on the phone, both of them told me the next step would be talking to some other kind of tech person and that would cost me. I thought that was pretty crappy seeing as I am paying for this service already..why should I have to pay for help?

Now that your message is in the right forum, we can offer some help.

The SIMPLEST and most reliable solution, not to mention probably the cheapest, is to use ethernet. Cards are fairly inexpensive for both laptops and desktops, and despite the fact that 2-wire supports USB, it's not the way everyone else is doing it.

Well, the desktop does not have anything needed for ethernet..won't I have to buy an adapter and router for that? That still does not tell me why I am showing connected to the network through the 2 wire modem on my laptop but all of the sudden..my desktop says it is not connected..yet it is. I am willing to try the ethernet cable even though everyone tells me it is slower..as long as it does not cost alot...if it does I may well just switch networks. Seems the last few months the server is down alot and it is very slow..that never used to happen.
